Govt considering extending visa-on-arrival facility to Chinese nationals | Zee News

New Delhi; Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposed visit to China, India is considering extending the tourist visa-on-arrival facility to citizens of that country.

The matter was discussed threadbare on Tuesday at a high-level meeting chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh where security agencies, however, expressed reservations and suggested a cautious approach before taking the final decision.

Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma, who also attended the meeting, however, said a decision whether to extend the facility to China, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Canada would be taken soon.

"We have suggested to the Home Minister that extending the tourist visa-on-arrival facility to citizens of 40 countries has led to a quantum jump in tourists arrival. The Home Minister has accepted the proposal for extending the facility to five more countries for discussion," he said.

Home Ministry officials said security agencies have red flagged in granting the visa-on-arrival facility to Chinese nationals due to various reasons.

Frequent issuance of stapled visa by China to people from Arunachal Pradesh was one of the key reasons for the objection, an official said.

However, there is a high possibility of over-ruling the objection of the security agencies by the highest level of the government, he said.

There is a possibility of announcement of visa-on-arrival facility to Chinese nationals before the Prime Minister's proposed visit to China in May.

Tourism Ministry is pitching for offering the facility to China as during December 2014, a total of 14,083 tourist visa-on-arrival (TVoA) were issued as compared to 2,700 during December 2013, registering a growth of 421.6 per cent.

During January-December 2014, 39,046 TVoA were issued as compared to 20,294 TVoAs during the corresponding period of 2013, registering a growth of 92.4 per cent.

Foreign tourist arrivals in Rajasthan to touch 2.5 million by 2018: Vasundhara Raje - The Times of India
TNN | Apr 20, 2015, 11.31 AM IST

JAIPUR: Chief minister Vasundhara Raje on Sunday said that the tourism arrivals in the state will see a quantum jump by 2018, with foreign tourist arrivals going up to 2.5 million and domestic tourists going up to 50 million over the next three years.

Raje talked about the potential in the tourism sector during the inauguration of the 8th edition of the Great Indian Travel Bazaar (GITB) in Jaipur on Sunday. Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said that it was appropriate that the GITB was again being held in Jaipur as Jaipur and Rajasthan have become synonymous with tourism.

Happy that about 10,000 pre-structured, pre-scheduled meetings will be held during the next two-days, she hoped that the foreign tour operators - present at the meet in large numbers - would give their inputs and suggestions for improved tourism products in the country.

She said that the existing Tourism unit policy would be announced shortly in Rajasthan and will make easy availability of land for tourism units as well as address conversion issues of hotels. The tourism sector, she said, would be an important part of business for the three-day Resurgent Rajasthan summit scheduled to be held in November in Jaipur later this year. She invited investment for new hotels, new circuits and tourism related infrastructure.

Additional director general, ministry of tourism, Usha Sharma, said in her special address that the existing destinations like the beaches of Goa, the back waters of Kerala and the golden triangle circuit were becoming dated. Instead, new destinations like swadesh darshan, desert circuit, Buddhist theme and Himalaya theme will be fresh experience to the tourists.

The international mart has been organized by the state department of tourism, Union ministry of tourism, and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). In the last eight years, GITB has hosted 1,817 foreign tourists operators, 50 countries, 1,661 exhibitors, 1,868 stalls and 57,185 pre-scheduled B2B meetings.
