Government launches ‘Mother of Humanity’ award

So what is your solution? Not building Nuclear power plant at all? If no, do you think BD have much option to choose partner to build Nuclear power plant when only Russia and China are currently available for this job now in the world?
Was the very expensive Rooppur at a cost of $12.6 billion really needed in a very poor country like Bangladesh? The equivalent 2400 MW capacity coal, diesel or gas-fired power plants could have been built with only a cost of about $2.4 billion to $3.0 billion.

The country will pay about an average of $450 million in interest every year for the Russian loan at maturity and about $600 million of the Principal. A total of $1,050 million dollars for 20 years after maturity. So, the (Principal + interest) total cost becomes $21 billion (not $12.6 billion). Anyone can now calculate the KWH or unit cost of power produced in these two power plant units.

I do not think it was a wise decision to invest so much for so little return. In the case of India it sends spaceships to observe the Universe, and in the case of BD it builds nuclear power plants. Both are similarly wasteful, but the leaders think it otherwise. They think wasting this much money is prestigious, it is a sign of development.

This eye-catching development is happening at a time when people have to buy China make sponge sandals. So, why not build factories that will produce sandals and others, and create wealth?

One point to note is, Nuclear energy to very clean. And the cost to generate energy is lower compared to oil or gas.

Yes, nuclear energy is certainly clean. But, so is wind or wave-generated power as well as gas power plant. Being a poor country BD cannot afford the luxury of expensive nuclear power. This type is for the rich man's club dominated by all the technologically superior western countries and Japan.

One or two nuclear plants on the soil of BD will neither bring any environmental safety to itself or to the world because it is China and India who are creating CO2 pollution at random that is spreading also over BD.

Moreover, nuclear energy is safe only until a disaster strikes it, like Chernobyl, Fukushima, and others. Rooppur is very near to the Padma. An accident happens and almost all the land south of this point will become unfit for living. Not in Rooppur, it should have been built somewhere south on an island in the BoB.

However, after making a little study of Rooppur I do not think BD should have opted for the nuclear option and take a very high-interest loan from untrustworthy Russia. I have reason to believe that someone in London has brokered the expensive deal. But, people are hoodwinked to worship Rooppur nuclear power.

I think, for long term Nuclear plant is a good deal. Eventually we will have to look for sources other than Gas, Oil, Coal.

Wind power, Solar Power, Hydro power won't amount to much because of our lack of various things.....

Eventually we will need some nuclear power plants. So it's better if we get in the habit of operating them. Maybe in the distant future we will also be able to make components for such power plants. But it's too early to talk about that.

Haseena (nominal) will be the first recipient.

The government has launched the ‘Mother of Humanity’ award for social work to recognise the contributions of five individuals and institutions working to improve the lives of the marginalised, those left behind, the disadvantaged and the disabled.

A draft of the ‘Mother of Humanity Social Work Award Policy, 2018’ was approved at a cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Secretariat on Monday.

“The term Mother of Humanity refers to the prime minister,” Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam told the media. “It reflects her recognition as the Mother of Humanity on the international stage.”

The UK-based ‘Channel 4’ dubbed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina the ‘Mother of Humanity’ last year after she gave refuge to hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas fleeing persecution in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. Now the government is launching an award named after it.

According to the award guidelines, it is similar to the National Award. Five individuals or organisations will receive the awards on Jan 2, Social Welfare Day, said Alam.

WHO WILL RECEIVE THE AWARD?

An award may be presented for:

>>Contributions to the welfare and rehabilitation of elderly women, widows or those who face domestic violence

>>Contributions to the social protections, self-reliance and employment of marginalised and disadvantaged

>>Notable contributions to the welfare, improvement of quality of life, employment, inclusive education and social protection of people with disabilities and neuro-developmental disorders

>>Contributions to the welfare, betterment and rehabilitation of children who come in contact with the law, ex-convicts, vagabonds and the homeless

>>Any notable contribution by an individual or institution to the development of skill, thinking, quality of life or the environment, the improvement of physical or mental health on the social level and, above all, positive contributions to society and the state in terms of human welfare and humanity

Award recipients will be presented with an 18-carat 25gm gold medal, a replica of the award, a Tk 200,000 check and an honorary certificate.

The award will be equivalent to the national Shadhinata Padak and Ekushe Padak, he said.

Committees at the district-level and a cabinet committee led by the most senior minister will determine the recipients each year.

Asked whether the awards will be presented in 2018, Shafiul Alam said:

“I do not know if they have taken the necessary preparations. But I believe we will begin the process every July.”

Hasina made a big mistake by taking in these rohingya muslims. These rohingyas will bring destruction to Bangladesh, mark my words.

These rohingya muslims are getting Bangladesh nationality cards very easily and doing all sorts of crime in Saudi Arabia and Middle east and bringing a bad name to Bangladesh.

Coxs bazaar has become a safe haven for yaba dealers and smugglers after these rohingyas landed there. Also their population in coxs bazaar is now close to the local bengalis. The local bengalis are now in fear of becoming a minority in their own land.

The rohingyas are now migrating to other parts of Bangladesh. Soon they will be assimilated with the rest of the population of Bangladesh which will make repatriation of rohingyas difficult.

Already millions of dollar are being spent behind these rohingyas and the government even alloted Bhashan char for them which is unnecessary.

I agree its a bad idea for BD (one off nuclear plant with no long term commitment to say 3 step strategic plan like India has)....but India case is different with the "spaceships"....we need that remote sensing capability for both military and civilian economic reasons (farming, mining, resource management, measuring development etc)....because we would have to pay through the nose and get worse quality too (bad bargaining power) if we delegate all that to a western nation etc.

VVER neither has a positive void coefficient (higher the cavitation, faster the nuclear reaction) like the dumb (graphite moderator) design employed at chernobyl...nor is it a 60's Boiling water design (low pressure and thus less passive safety built into it like say an intermediate heat-exchanger) like in Fukushima. It will be very safe. Even with the less safe nuclear designs of yesteryear 1000's more people have died from regular thermal power plants than nuclear.

Nope the sum paid back will be in then money and not today's.

With inflation counted in, BD will pay back much less than 12.6 billion in today's money.

As for the cost compared to other sources like coal and gas, the fuel costs are much lower and so you would spend no more over the lifetime of the plant to both build and operate it than fossil fuel plantrs. Also it is completely clean as well.

Uh no it wont...it has Libor baked in as the base rate with 1.75% on top of that as interest:

You really think the Russians are that stupid lol.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-bangladesh-russia-power-idUSKBN0U80TF20151225

“Russia will finance up to 90 percent of the total cost as credit with an interest rate of Libor plus 1.75 percent,” Bhyian told Reuters.

I will let you google what libor is, what currency its reference to and thus how it relates to a countries external finances (exchange rate, effective inflation etc)...and thus why its essentially inflation indexed.

1.75% (over 18 years) is thus pretty much the pure profit Russia makes on this deal.

Already taken that into account.

Libor for USD is just over 3% a year.

BD Taka is very stable against the USD, unlike a large country next door, and so as the BD economy powers at 7.1% a year average(according to HSBC but likely to be higher) to 2030, then the repayments will simply be very very easy.
BD in return gets a huge amount of clean power with minimal running costs for many decades.

Thanks for your concern but please feel free to not worry about BD anymore.

Your forex reserves are not looking good, both in level and stagnation trend now. So yeah I wouldn't talk crap about "instability" in a country that is both SDDS category (unlike you), investment grade credit rating (unlike you) and has goods+services engagement with the world 12 times yours....investment engagement 25 times yours and stock market cap 30 times yours. Its like comparing a paper boat in a sink of water to an actual ocean liner.

So try again.

Thus you indeed will be paying a hefty profit margin to Russia just from the interest rate (quite unlike your ludicrous claim that it will be less in future than in today's dollars....do you even understand why LIBOR was put in the first place you complete utter idiot?....or you telling me Taka is going to gain at 3% per year against the USD to offset that?)

That's on top of the profit they already extracted from you on the principal commitment.

So yeah 1.0175^18 = 1.37. 37% pure return for Russia (assuming of course BD takes full time to pay back the loan - being the LDC that is likely will). Probably can add another 13% (being conservative) for the principal profit margin. 50% (at least) of the final cost (in todays or tomorrows dollars..and whatever worse it will be in Taka) will basically be profit to Russia....quite the rip-off.

But then again beggars with no local industrial capacity cannot be choosers I suppose....especially when they put feelz first rather than facts for basic development. @bluesky is very correct that its a stupid idea and big waste of money to try make it seem you are doing cordon bleu cuisine when you cant even boil pasta when left to your own devices.

INR just loves to lose value against dollar, unlike the BDT.

...do you even understand why LIBOR was put in the first place you complete utter idiot?....

So butt-hurt there.

PS - Are you aware that inflation in BD is more than the rate at which BDT depreciates against US dollar, and so a loan linked the USD Libor rate inflates away over time.
This is not the case for a large country that is BD's neighbour.

INR has like 1000 times the exposure in world liquidity that BDT ever will have. So yeah no one cares how the little paper boat in its sink of water claims its doing....cept maybe the little toddler playing with it lol.

PS - Are you aware that inflation in BD is more than the rate at which BDT depreciates against US dollar

PSS...are you aware BD depreciates against the US dollar specifically because of that inflation? You really think your self imposed dampening factor by way of a junk credit rating + GDDS LDC-type categorisation (and a myriad of other things like crappy banking, finance and miniscule stock market) matters to the cold hard fact such a loan repayment will still wreck a hefty toll on BD's finances over time (given the shitty ROI and even worse opportunity cost)?

and so a loan linked the USD Libor rate inflates away over time.

LOL wrong. It doesn't "inflate" away given the correlation between inflation and depreciation. You need to actually gain against the USD to reduce this cost on Taka in any significant meaningful way.

Simply creating inflation (and all that cost on your local economy) to try bring out some dampening by sustaining your shit credit rating, tiny liquidity market cap and IMF classification (instead of improving those) is worse than a 5th-world banana republic basket case strategy. Hey all you BD people, ignore your calorie intake reduction (cant buy as much food as before coz inflation) and your household income decline (thanks to inflation again)...we need to prioritise saving a few % less taka for this one off prestige feelz project that wont mean anything to your regular lives....and you just gonna have to suck it up k...yeah sorry we have to keep things as badly run institutionally to make that work, sorry folks....corruption + stability go hand in hand for the betterment of BAL-desh....big brother BAL is watching you.

This is why idiots like you dont advance one bit even in developed countries with actual free markets, rule of law and democracy.

Although I stated the total value will be $21 billion the report below says that the govt claims that it will be $18.23 billion with interest, and the period of payment is 28 years, not 20 years that I said. So, paying $6 billion extra is nothing for the BCL brats here. But, it is a very large money.

Moreover, nuclear plants are not needed for a poor country like BD where our main export earning is done by the labor of women workforce. And with $18 billion Bd could have built 16,000 MW worth of other types of power plants. Rooppur decision is a shame, ধার করিয়া ঘী ভাত খাওয়া।
