Former defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa said he would run for president in elections this year and would stop the spread of Islamist extremism by rebuilding the intelligence service and surveilling citizens, Reuters said yesterday.

Gotabaya said the attacks could have been prevented if the current government had not dismantled the intelligence network and extensive surveillance capabilities that he built up during the war and later on.

“Because the government was not prepared, that’s why you see a panic situation,” he said in an interview with Reuters.

Gotabaya said he would be a candidate “100 percent”, firming up months of speculation that he plans to run in the elections, which are due by December.

He was critical of the government’s response to the bombings. “Various people are blaming various people, not giving exactly the details as to what happened, even people expect the names, what organisation did this, and how they came up to this level, that explanation was not given,” he said.

Commenting on the two lawsuits filed in US against him, Gotabaya said the cases were baseless and only a “little distraction” as he prepared for the election campaign.

He said he had asked US authorities to renounce his citizenship and that process was nearly done, clearing the way for his candidature.

He said that if he won, his immediate focus would to be tackle the threat from radical Islam and to rebuild the security set-up.

“It’s a serious problem, you have to go deep into the groups, dismantle the networks,” he said, adding he would give the military a mandate to collect intelligence from the ground and to mount surveillance of groups turning to extremism.

Gotabaya said that a military intelligence cell he had set up in 2011 of 5,000 people, some of them with Arabic language skills and that was tracking the bent towards extremist ideology some of the Islamist groups were taking in eastern Sri Lanka was disbanded by the current government.

“They did not give priority to national security, there was a mix-up. They were talking about ethnic reconciliation, then they were talking about human rights issues, they were talking about individual freedoms,” he said.

Officials said many of these secret intelligence cells were disbanded because they faced allegations of abuse, including torture and extra judicial killings.

Is he talking about Xinjiang as model?

Sri Lankan Muslims don't care about the model as long as they are safe. It doesn't matter if a dozen or a hundred radicalized Muslims get thrown into a re-education camp or even thrown into the sea as long as they are safe and peace is maintained.

As a Muslim Radical Islam is a problem and should be dealt with sorry to say :tsk::tsk:

"Officials said many of these secret intelligence cells were disbanded because they faced allegations of abuse, including torture and extra judicial killings."

This above is a great way to create even more terrorists. As the americans and shia iraqis learnt, when you mass torture and abuse people, you end up turning even innocent people into monsters.

This man just seems like a power hungry zalim jumping on an opportunity to further his own ambitions for power.

Increase security, note down the activities of dangerous groups, don't take threats lightly. Arrest and punish people through a court of law.

But mass abuse, torture and extra judicial killings? No.

It worked during the war and pretty much every Lankan in this forum living in SL support him. The situation isn't that different in Sri Lanka either

No, you can do anti-terror without looking at the Xinjiang oppression. The West does it and tackles the radicals effectively without this.

Do you support the Xinjiang model?
Well The West don't have any region with Native Population supporting Extremism in their own homeland. Better put them to concentration/Training camps to mend them forcefully into civilized people, or at least their children, compared Bombing them to oblivion like the west does in so many countries in middle east. Good luck teaching them nicely.Perhaps everyone forgets when they were playing Football with Heads of Jawans of Frontier Constabulary KPK and releasing videos of beheading FC Soldiers. Untill Boots landed in FATA with Full force and crushed these Orcs killing them in thousands to hell.

IT IS OUT IN THE OPEN.

The target was Islam ALL ALONG.

Welcome the India-Myanmar model.

Sri Lankan Muslims don't care about the model as long as they are safe. It doesn't matter if a dozen or a hundred radicalized Muslims get thrown into a re-education camp or even thrown into the sea as long as they are safe and peace is maintained.
Yeah, namesake Muslims will easily leave following Islam in its true sense and adopt 'progressive' ways to satisfy the majority.
Those who don't will be 're-educated'.

It worked during the war and pretty much every Lankan in this forum living in SL support him. The situation isn't that different in Sri Lanka either
We don't have any Sri Lankan Muslims here, do we?

Yeah yeah whatever

Why not. It brought Peace & Prosperity & eliminated extremism.
For someone who calls himself a peaceful civilian, you sure always seem to support the oppression of Muslims.

Did it really work? You fought a civil war for 25 years+ against a minority group who number about 15% of your population. Sure you won the war in the end but that doesn't mean your methods were good or even effective.

Some people in this forum support a lot of crap. Just look above, we have a Pakistani (probably a muslim too) openly supporting chinese oppression of uighurs muslims. So having the forum support of sri lankans members means nothing, having support alone doesn't mean something is right.
