Goa shipyard to build six patrol vessels for Coast Guard

Panaji, May 9 (IANS) Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) has been commissioned to build six offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) for the Indian Coast Guard, a company statement said Wednesday.

'The vessels are based on in-house design of Goa Shipyard Ltd, which has considerable expertise in designing and constructing a range of patrol vessels for the Indian defence forces,' the statement by the public sector shipyard said.

'These vessels when commissioned will be the most advanced patrol vessels in service with the Indian Coast Guard. Overall length of the vessels is 105 metres with a displacement of about 2,400 tonnes,' it added.

The defence ministry-operated company, located in Vasco, around 35 km from here, has in the past built more than a dozen OPVs for the Indian Coast Guard.

The new vessels will be fitted with contemporary Navigational Integrated Bridge systems, Bridge Watch Navigational Call Up systems, CCTV systems and additional features such as quick response boats for rescue and anti-piracy operations.

If you look at it , then Indian coast guard operates more 2000 Ton+ Ships than PN

@Spark
Is this another order or the same one that was placed a month ago ?? I asked this because last year also one order for 5-6 OPV for ICG was placed and that too went to Goa Shipyard.

Don't start something that will get out of hand. It is clear to anyone who looks that the ICG is larger and more able than many navies in the world but it needs to be. And anyway the PN, by nature, is a coastal defence force in a similar role to ICG do this shouldn't be too much of a surprise.

Remember Goa Shipyard has good delivery report. And it is also getting modernized.

great news.....well I have got a college friend there...

Great move! Think about it; we've got a 7,000+ Km long coastline. But before we add more firepower, we need to add political will.
