Goa Shipyard launches 10th improved Sankalp-class OPV for Indian Coast Guard

India's Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has launched another 105 m improved Sankalp-class offshore patrol vessel (OPV) ordered for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG).

The OPV, which will be in service as ICGS Sujeet (19), was launched on 25 May at GSL's facilities in Goa. Sujeet will be the 10th vessel in the Sankalp class, which has also been referred to in India as the Samarth class after the programme's third ship, which features a longer beam than its predecessors.

Sujeet is part of an INR20 billion (USD287 million) contract approved by India's Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) in August 2016.

Very important that the Indian coast guard has sufficient strength considering the threats of ISIS infiltrating South India by sea and the ever-constant threat of terrorists and drug traffickers from the west.

How will an Offshore Patrol Vessel help the Coast Guard? Is it intended to police the common fishing grounds for Indian and Pakistani motorised fishing vessels in the 'Northern Arabian Sea'? Why are we going for these rather than the normal sloops and cutters?

These can carry helis and has the capabilities required for saving large amount of rescuers and fight oil spill. But traditionally coast guard ships fighting oil spill has been poor.
