An Indian state has proposed reclassifying the country's national bird - the peacock - as vermin, local media report.

Goa's Agriculture Minister Ramesh Tawadkar said peacocks were damaging crops and could be culled.

Monkeys, wild boars and wild bison, Goa's state animal, would also be culled under the plans.

Shrinking forest cover in Goa has left less space for wildlife, which is encroaching on human habitat.

Mr Tawadkar said a committee had been formed to assess the peacocks' impact, along with that of the other animals.

"Some farmers said that peacocks also were damaging their crops in fields in hilly areas," he told Indian news agency IANS.

The birds are currently protected under India's Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.

The minister said he was aware of the peacock's status but insisted the government would follow a procedure whereby the bird could also be classified as a nuisance.

Animal rights groups have opposed the plans.

"If Goa wants to remain on the tourist map, people expect it to be a paradise for animals too," said Poorva Joshipura from PETA India.

Last month Goa's state government sparked outrage when it reclassified the coconut tree, which previously had protected status, as a palm because it does not have branches.

Officials said the move was necessary to make it easier to fell "economically unviable" and dangerous trees.

But environmentalists fear large numbers of coconut trees could now be removed to make way for development.

:mad::mad: Now these beautiful creatures will be Killed in the name of being VERMIN .

Wild boars and deers are occasionally culled in many places as sanctioned by government. Licensed gun owners can do a trophy hunt during such an event.

These justice warriors including PETA does not understand animal overpopulation in restricted forest areas and how it affects the settlements nearby. It is like story tales for them. Let these animals be moved to large forest areas elsewhere in the country.

All above mentioned meats are tasty!!:D Specially wild boars. When you cull them, do not waste as you are not killing them for disease, but for over population!!

Arre bhai, gussa mat karo. I am also against killing, but when a govt. decides, then what? My thought is that if they decide to cull!! I know the reason is humans, but can't kill humans. Let humans perish after that!!

BTW its 39 degree here and the day is "Magha Saptami" Winter is supposed to decline after today, but alas....its all because of us.:)

When my Dad was posted in Hilly areas of The state . A guy who lived in the neighbor found Peacock eggs in Forest . 2 of them hatched into Peacock's . One died while other grew up and remained in his house .

Nothing stupid about it. There have been population outbreaks of various animals in world history that needed special steps to be taken to bring them under control. Australia once called out its military to kill Emu's, and they ended up losing.

Emu War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Also kangaroos, camels, rabbits, cane toads and the most hated of all birds the Indian Mynah bird are culled from time to time
