Singur: The locals of Singur have assured Tata Motors of full cooperation for setting up a plant, prompting the industrial giant to consider meeting the representatives in this regard.

Post-riots, Singur U-turn on Tata Motors

Tata Motors has indicated it will meet Representatives of Singur landlosers who had given land for Tata Motors' Nano car manufacturing plant before the company withdrew from the state in 2009 following violent local protests.

They were seeking higher land price besides other demands from Tatas'.

"I can call on you during one of my visits to Kolkata", Tata Motors Vice President (Govt Affairs and Collaborations ) A S Puri said in his response on December 9.

He was responding to a letter by president of the Singur Shilpa Vikash Unnayan Committee, Uddayan Das, apprising him of the locals' changed attitude towards Tata's enterprise.

Post-riots, Singur U-turn on Tata Motors

Das had written to the Tata Motors on November 11, saying the situation has undergone a change since then.

He had said that while the company's assessment that the situation at Singur was not favourable as yet for industrial activity was true, "this was correct to some extent till December 2009."

However, Das said, the situation had changed since then and the people of Singur would now support and cooperate for renewed industrial activity.

"We never thought that inspite of completion of 85 per cent of total project work, you would take such a painful decision to close the (Nano) project", he wrote.

The response of Tatas' has kindled rehabilitation hopes among members of committee of land-losers formed by the CPI(M) after the exit of Tata Motors' Nano project from Singur in Hooghly district more than a year ago.

He said that the people of Singur wanted Tata Motors to do something on the acquired land, which could be a car project or something else and sought a meeting with the company to explain the current scenario there.

Leaving the politics of the Singur fracas aside (esp. the edifying role of Mamata), this outcome is inevitable. Local jobs were involved and the the locals were hoping to rake in some benefits from rising land prices as well. All came to naught when Tata moved out. Nobody, not the politicos of all hues, not India Inc., nobody imagined that Ratan Tata would up and out; more so after sinking 400-odd crores into Singur. He did, then set up shop in Gujarat and most of all; has amortized the investment of the ancillaries in Singur.
About Tata's comeback to Singur, that can only be speculated upon. The joker in the pack is Mamata-didi; or to be precise, her party's performance in the impending state polls. Few people look forward to tangling with a neurotic woman. While on her plus side, few people seem to be comfortable with giving a further lease of life to the dinosaurish CPM.
All in all, a Hobson's choice for the people of WB. IMO,Tata has an easier choice on their hands.

Mamta is outright lying. There's no way she can get the land back to the landowners. Land laws don't allow you to do that.

Tata is still willing to come back. I don't know how things are going to turn after the election.

Most unfortunate are the people of Singur, they have been made pawn to the politicians of both sides.

About Tata being willing to come back; my understanding from (some Tata) officials is that it is a non-sequitur (at present). Though the final call will be taken by Ratan Tata himself.
Yes, Ratan Tata was very serious and sincere about setting up shop there (in WB). Firstly because of a good personal rapport that he had/has with the likes of Buddhadeb, the Industries Minister- Nirupam Sen (did i get the name right?) and not to forget Somnath Chatterjee (in a previous avatar in WBSIDC). BTW, many people in India Inc. share that respect for the names mentioned (because of their personal integrity). Coupled with the fact that it made sense to set up a plant in WB to supply demand in Eastern India and export to BD.

Then came "wonder-woman". The land accquistion issues (which may have been there) were nothing compared to the issues in Western India, and i'm not even mentioning Orissa.

If there is indeed a re-think, it is likely to happen only after the polls are sealed and dried.

Unfortunate lots, aren't we? :hitwall:

I also respect the three because of the same reasons you mentioned. Sadly the lower spectrum of CMP are simply intolerable and they have to be weeded out.

I just hope the win cause Mamta a heart attack out of sheer joy and they make Pranab Mukherje the CM. We will declare her shaheed and put up a statute at Dalhousie Square.

i wish i could add something constructive to your sentiments.......
IMHO, the electorate in WB are between a rock and a hard place. The CPM started off (many years ago) on a seemingly good wicket and then with single-minded nihilism dismantled (nearly) every institution that they could find. Having first condemned the bourgeois, they then proceeded to create a rock-hard, totally inert petty bourgeois. The earlier comrades could be admired for dedication to their cause (perhaps) but deserve no marks for prescience.

Ah. i'm rambling into political discourse now, a no-go area for me.
(IMO, Religious doctrines and Political idealogies were solely created by humans to rule the minds of other human beings)

About the last scenario that you have sketched, don't know how that can happen?? But if Mamata-didi turns in to another 'Shaheed Minar', TMC is likely to evaporate. Then Pranab-da will hold the reins of power! :azn:

I find communism strangely similar to Semitic religions. They are amazingly well-organized and structured, has the same 'Us and Them' concept, believe in books that can't be questioned, dish out death sentence to apostate even has the same sectarian violence.

No doubt they have fought crusades with each other time and again in past.

I believe the CPM is the lesser of the two evils for Bengal.....
in the last decade ... especially the last 5-6 years the CPM government has been pretty proactive in pursuing better infrastructure and development....

on a personal note calcutta is losing it charm.... :(

By the way Capt, you'll be pleased to know that last few years has been an welcoming change in WB, despite the singur debacle. Many new projects are coming up, Infra also getting built.

New Town Kolkata - SkyscraperCity

^Check this out for latest updates(ignore the typical bong chit-chat and rant :P).

i last visited Kolkata in 2005 (spent 5-6 days). The changes were very visible and are likely to be even more exponential now.
One of the memories of that visit is zipping through the elevated roads in Central Avenue. Compared to earlier stop-start-crawl-stop movement on that road. Another small thing, the Science City exhibit is (arguably) one of the best in India.

Alas, Herr HongWu is determined to flatten all that. ;)
Including some of my favorite small (family run) eateries in China Town. Sadly did'nt have a chance to eat there on the last visit, got taken out to Mainland China instead!! Had to defer to my host's choice, though i'd have taken him to Thirity Bazar instead and searched some place there.
