As part of the operation against the Haftar forces, the forces of the Government of National Accord managed to recapture an area of 2,600 kilometers and reach 13 kilometers from the city of Sirte.
The forces of the GNA (a government based in Tripoli and recognized by the United Nations) that are widely supported by the Turkish government after extensive advance on Friday (June 16th) that led to the recapture of the provinces of Tripoli (capital) And Murqub District, they launched a new operation against the forces of General Khalifa Haftar (under the command of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, France and Russia).
In an interview with MashreghNews, a field source who is closely following the developments in Libya pointed out the details of the operation and added: "The coalition forces attacked from the eastern areas of Misrata province to the northern and coastal areas of Sirte province with the aim of gaining control of the city again."
The field source said that the coalition forces carried out the operation with the help of the terrorists sent from Syria and the advisers and the army air force, adding that the operation was carried out in the first step from El Hisha El Jadida to Sirte city against General Haftar's forces.
He added: "After several hours of heavy fighting, the forces of the GNA managed to take control of the areas of 'Al-Wushka, Bouirat Al-Hassoun, District 30, Power Plant, Wadi Jaref' from the Haftar forces."
According to this field source, on Saturday (June 17), during the operation and advance in the northern axis of Sirte province, the GNA forces recaptured about 2,600 square kilometers of area and reached 13 kilometers from the important and strategic city of Sirte.
The advance continued until Saturday evening, and the GNA forces even managed to reach the west of the city of Sirte, but were met with resistance from Haftar forces and unidentified airstrikes, and were forced to retreat to the power plant and Qabibeh triode suburbs. And the operation was temporarily suspended. If the operation on this axis continues with the recapture of the city of Sirte, the forces of the GNA can advance to the eastern regions, including "Harwa, Tas'ein, etc." and provide more security for the city of Sirte. And pave the way for the recapture of central and southern areas, including Al-Jufra Airbase and the areas of Waddan, Houn and Sawknah.
According to the latest information, the GNA has transferred new forces and equipment to the western regions of Sirte and put the liberation of the city on the agenda, and is trying to change the field developments in the northern axis of Sirte province to its advantage. In contrast, forces under the command of General Khalifa Haftar have taken positions on the Al-Qabiba axis and the mentioned triode, west of the city of Sirte. Al-Qabiba area is about 13 km away from Sirte city At the same time, Emirati and Russian drones are flying in the skies over the city of Sirte and the Sirte- al-Washka route.
According to MashreghNews, Turkish military drones, which are responsible for providing air support to the GNA forces, are also targeting the gatherings of the Haftar forces in the area and are trying to open the way for the ground forces; In the coming hours and days, we will have to wait and see whether the indirect battle between Turkey and Russia on Libyan soil will turn into a direct and full-scale war in the area and maybe beyond.
