GM to halt production at several plants, cut more than 14,000 jobs
  • The automaker plans to cut production at several factories and reduce its salaried workforce by 15 percent, more than 14,000 employees.
  • The reductions are part of a massive restructuring that will cost up to $3.8 billion.
  • The UAW responds by vowing to use "every legal, contractual and collective bargaining avenue" to fight the changes.
General Motors said Monday it plans to effectively halt production at a number of plants in the U.S. and Canada next year and cut more than 14,000 jobs in a massive restructuring that will cost up to $3.8 billion.

[...]

The Detroit automaker said plants in Ohio, Michigan, Maryland, and Ontario will be "unallocated" in 2019 and it will cease operations at two additional plants outside of North America by the end of next year. It will also wind down operations at propulsion plants in White Marsh, Maryland, and Warren, Michigan.

Although the decision effectively shuts down those plants, the company wouldn't say outright that they are closing. Shuttering a plant is a matter of negotiation with the UAW, GM spokeswoman Stephanie Rice said in an email.

[...]

The company plans to cut 15 percent of its salaried workers, resulting in a 25 percent reduction of its executive ranks, the company said. The cuts will eliminate more than 14,000 jobs in all, roughly 8,100 white collar positions and more than 6,000 factory jobs, according to the company.

[...]

"This callous decision by GM to reduce or cease operations in American plants, while opening or increasing production in Mexico and China plants for sales to American consumers, is, in its implementation, profoundly damaging to our American workforce," said Terry Dittes, a UAW vice president who leads negotiations with GM.

Wow lots of edits in the OP which is skipping over this crucial point about shutting down sedan production and concentrating on SUV production...just like Ford announced a few months ago.

“...The largest U.S. automaker has invested heavily in crossovers, SUVs and trucks as consumer demand has shifted from traditional passenger cars. It is a move mirrored by decisions at several automakers, perhaps most notably Ford and Fiat-Chrysler. Ford has also said it plans to reduce its salaried workforce, telling investors Oct. 5 it will provide the details to those layoffs by the second quarter of next year.”

America Has Fallen Out of Love With the Sedan
“...Until now. Sedans, long a symbol of the American open road, are fading in the rearview mirror. In an industry-altering shift, millions of drivers have made what seems to be a complete embrace of sport-utility vehicles.

The speed of consumers’ change in taste has caught auto makers off guard, and they are racing to rework their lineups.

Plus this is a bit of a problem now with sedans vs SUVs/trucks. Gives you a bit of a scale in how big US vehicles are.

Most certainly the case. These were poor performing models like the Chevy Volt etc. I live right next to the GM plant in Arlington, Texas which makes most of the Trucks including the Cadillac. They are actually expanding their plant capacity!
Amazing how the news reports a distorted story!

Trump - trade war is easy to winrar
Its almost as hilarious to see Trumps first reaction being a threat to cut the subsidies GM enjoyed all this time, in this political PR campaign they call a trade war about alleged "unfair" play, as is watching the ever delusional U.S. cheersquad squeel naive PR excuses and abhorent non-arguments like "GM is just reacting to poor sales", "they are just shutting down failed models", "I can personally anonymously testify everything is fine" or "they are changing their focus!" like parrots, as if that makes the ever growing big minus on the bottom line, in contrast to new plants and increased production in China, any better, when they were preaching about everything working out awesome according "mood"-o-meters, just 5 minutes before they read the anyways strongly restricted U.S. news in regards to this hot topic (everyone who has a clue already knew about this for weeks and whats going on in U.S. plants right now or rather "is not going on anymore").

Three plants closed by GM and trump is not happy about them. He is very angry.

GM's factory in China is manufacturing cars and selling them in China, Unlike Apple. the biggest problem with GM is that his car is not selling well in the US,but GM’s sales in China are greater than in the US. Now,Trump wants to kill GM? No wonder Trump went bankrupt several times:sarcastic:

GM will ditch USA for China because future of automobile industry is electric cars and rare earth elements for batteries and circuits are in China we all know this and Trup should realize this as fast as possible and stop screwing US economy for his own ego. Now so many Americans will suffer because of Trump.

Trump is complaining why GM didn't close its factories in China

In trump's opinion, job creation comes first
