Girls at Islamic school banned from running, teachers claim

Girls at Al-Taqwa College have been banned from running at sporting events because the principal believes it may cause them to lose their virginity, former teachers claim.

The schools regulator, the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority, is investigating the allegations, which have been referred to the state and federal education ministers.

It follows revelations in The Age last month that the principal of the Islamic school, Omar Hallak, told students that Islamic State was a plot by Western countries.

In a letter sent to the education ministers this week, a former teacher said female students were being discriminated against at the Truganina school.

"The principal holds beliefs that if females run excessively, they may 'lose their virginity'," the letter said.

"The principal believes that there is scientific evidence to indicate that if girls injure themselves, such as break their leg while playing soccer, it could render them infertile."

The former Al-Taqwa teacher said Mr Hallak prevented the female primary school cross country team from participating in a 2013 and 2014 district event.

They said Mr Hallak was unaware that female students had been training for the event and intervened when he realised they were set to compete.

The teacher said they had worked at another Islamic school where female students were encouraged to take part place in any sporting event.

"I look back on my time at Al-Taqwa with frustration and anger, which is how I felt most of the time while I was working there. I did my best to stay committed to the students however in the end, I was unable to provide the same opportunities to students that I was given when I was at primary school, more than 20 years ago."

Concerned female students expressed their concerns in a handwritten letter to the principal, saying it was unfair that the cross country event had been cancelled.

"It was really shocking to find out it has been cancelled because of the excuse girls can't run," the students said.

"Just because we are girls doesn't mean we can't participate in running events. It also doesn't say girls can't run in the hadith (the sayings of Muhammad)."

The students said parents were annoyed by the decision and "think that girls and boys should both be allowed to participate equally."

Another former Al-Taqwa College teacher backed the claims. "I was told the girls weren't allowed to participate. The reason was they might over-exert themselves and lose their virginity or be rendered infertile."

Hannah, a parent of two girls at the school, defended Al-Taqwa College and said her children participated in sport.

"They do basketball, they run around the school, they do everything, but when they sack one teacher, they can say whatever they want," she told 3AW.

She said the claims were "rubbish" and made her feel sick as both a mother and a Muslim.

When asked whether girls were banned from running in the cross country, she said "I'm not so sure".

Mr Hallak told The Age last month that he believed IS was a scheme by Israel and the US to control oil in the Middle East.

what in the actual f*ck?
where does religion or science approve of that idiot teacher's claim?

Those who are trying it make it out something Islamic just because the school's name and the principal are muslim, are . It's his personal perception nothing Islamic. Such retarded thoughts could be of anyone from any other religion. Sure he requires psychiatric help.

1. Following is a cutting from the page 889 from "Encyclopedia of Family health" and yes, every student of human anatomy knows that hymen can break due to excessive exercise and hence cant be taken as a reliable surrogate marker for virginity.

2. The report or news whatever you call it talks about some event(s) that took place between 2013 and 2014. Why the news reporting them now and not then when they actually occurred? Maybe the person in question was sacked, maybe some other actions taken against him, or maybe student's claim was not right. This news is not coming from any reliable source but from blogs and websites. At-least look for the authenticity and then the logic behind, and only then should you lash back. Thanks.

No wonder why most people hate Islam....
Those who hate a religion or a group of people need no good reason to hate. Why aboriginals in Australia were and still are treated like animals? Why native Americans were slaughtered by millions by conquistadors? Why blacks were treated and sold like animals? What reason their haters had for their hate towards these?

I need no certificate from blind haters who, even when presented with published material, fail to understand and get themselves educated.
Yeah right. Published material. Read your own published material. It's all based on the fact that "it can". You know "can", 'Could", "should" and words alike are pretty stupid to base your facts upon.

It can do this, It can do that. Or it can not do anything at all.
You could just die by reading this reply Or you could not. See, that's a possibility. And Rules should not be based upon any possibility but certainty.

Eh!!.. The Age and The Herald Sun are not blogs or web sites.. Those are reputed broad sheets in Victoria and Australia.. This case has gone to the highest echelons of the state government.. It is you who should refrain from commenting on things you know little about

What are the logic behind some archaic dark aged mumbo jumbo from a senile Islamic fundamentalist's BS ?? This is the 21st century.. Time to come out of your cave

@syedali73 is absolutely right. The hymen in virgins is a delicate vascular membranous structure that is liable to break in certain non-coital (meaning = penetrative sex) situations.

Running is one of them. Ballet and gymnastics are other notorious activities. Some martial arts that have elaborate groin stretches, Van Damme type splits and kicks as well. Less frequently, competition cycling.

Horse riding as well.

Also camel riding.
