Gilas Pilipinas' 31-year dominance ends as Indonesia claim Southeast Asian Games gold

Indonesia pulled off the shocker of the 31st Southeast Asian Games, upsetting highly favored Gilas Pilipinas 85-81, to end the Philippines' 31-year domination of men's 5x5 basketball.

It was the first time since 1989, and just the third time since 1977, that the Philippines has failed to win the gold medal in men's 5x5 basketball.

Indonesia waxed hot from the outside all game long, hitting 13 out of 31 three-point shots to keep Gilas at bay.

Naturalized player Marques Bolden, who missed Indonesia's first four games with a back injury, led his team with 18 points and 10 rebounds and came up big on both ends of the floor in the final minute to seal the biggest victory in Indonesian basketball history.

Philippine basketball level, only lost 5 points from Serbia national team ( several times meet USA team in Olympic finals)

The game is held in Serbia

This is pretty good. Philippines is a basketball powerhouse. Beating them isn't easy.

Thanks, this Pilipine team is actually full professional players with 1 import player from USA, they also bring Ravena brothers that play in J League ( Japanese basketball league)

When Malaysia beat them 31 years ago, it was basically Philippine amateur team. Philippine start abandoning their policy to use 100 % college team since Indonesia team beat them in SEABA (South East Asian Basketball Competition in final in 1996 ), the composition is about 50 % university students and 50 % professional players from their league PBA.

Now they use full team with best PBA players, including PBA MVP and 2 Ravena brothers played in Japan league

During the match, both team use 1 naturalized player. We have another player look African ( Derrick Michael), but he is 100 % Indonesian since born, mixed blood local player, another naturalized player from Senegal, Dame, is not played in this match as coach is confident with their local players

Indonesian naturalization player and Pilippine naturalization player during Today macth

Issues with these FIBA windows, qualifiers... in the last few years is that the top teams like Serbia with bunch of NBA players, Euroleague,... players are often forced to play with their second or third team against the competition. And everyone is getting better, and Serbia as a small country can't really form 3-4 top national teams. For example for this game, from the players which were there:

Nemanja Bjelica (GSW NBA, former Euroleague MVP) - did not play
Vasilije Micic (Anadolu Efes, Euroleague MVP, and two times Euroleague final four MVP) - did not play
Nikola Kalinic (Red Star Belgrade, ABA league MVP) - did not play

The only player, from our first team which played in this game is Milos Teodosic.

And guys who were not even there:

Nikola Jokic (Denver Nuggets, Two times NBA league MVP)
Bogdan Bogdanovic (Atlanta Hawks, among other things Euroleague 2010-2020 decade Team)
Vladimir Lucic (Bayern Munich, All Euroleague first team in 2021)
Nikola Milutinov (CSKA Moscow)
Marko Guduric (Fenerbahce)
Aleksej Pokusevski (Oklahoma City Thunder)
Nemanja Nedovic (Panathinaikos)

These are all NBA, or Eurolague players. There are few more less important players, that were not there, but even if you take a look at the list above, you can see that they played against Serbian third team, with 10 top players from our them, not being there at all, or not playing. Last time they played against us, and we had a full team (more or less) was during FIBA World Cup in 2019, and they lost 126 : 67 (59 points loss)

Pretty Much the same deal with Team USA.

NBA contract forbid most of them into unimportant match, and depends on what is unimportant. Some time FIBA world cup (as in how we lost in 2019) or even Olympic Game are unimportant (We still won 2020 Olympic with a B Team tho)

Problem is, you are asking these NBA player risking millions or even hundred of millions dollars to play an unpaid match just for National Glory, and most player do not show interest anyway unless there are a good coach for the team to begin with. Most player are unwilling to join Popovich team when he led the 2020 campaign.

In all, most of these NBA type won't play National Team unless it is really important. The time when we see people playing for their country is over, now it's all about money

Those Pilipine players in that Serbian- Gilas Pilipinas game are all university students by the way (during 2020), there is one Kai Soto who doesnt get to university but he is still very young, I think around 19-20 years at that time. The import player ( African ethnic) is also a university student in Philippine university ( Ateneo University ) during that time.

In other popular team sport, Indonesia is also good in South East Asian level.

Men volley ball get Gold after defeating Vietnam team in Final with 3 : 0 :smokin:

Women volley ball get Bronze ( Gold is for Thailand, and Silver is for Vietnam)

I understand that. The issue here for the top European national teams, is that we have a bunch of players in the NBA, and top European leauges such as Euroleague, Eurocup, and now there are new league and cup organized under FIBA, FIBA Champions League, and FIBA Europe Cup. There is a serious conflict between FIBA and Euroleague, because FIBA reorganized qualification tournaments with so called windows, and what not.

Now we are in a situation that there is no way in hell that NBA and Euroleague teams will let the players in the middle of the season to risk injuries, get tired and all that playing against second or third rate teams. We often had issues with players getting injured in such matches. And add to that that our players are also playing in top European domestic leagues, with those teams also not being happy to send players, so for each round of such qualifiers we end up with missing 10-15 players, and we never can be sure, who will be there.

So there is not a lot of time for players to get familiar with each other, you will not be able to build team chemistry, coach will not be able to see what works and what is the issue, since for each round he ends up with a different team. Because of this Serbia did not even qualify for the last Olympic Games in Tokyo. For example in Pre-Olympics tour US lost to Nigeria for similar reasons.

And on the other side of the spectrum you have lower tier national teams, with players that are not playing in world top leagues, so it's much easier for those teams to go full power against 3-4 team of Serbia, France, US.... I am not trying to demean those teams, but games like these are not telling us much about some team real position and potential on the world scene.
