Is that why it was so popular with Al Capone and the mafiosi! AFAIK, it was their weapon of choice. About cost, probably la Cosa Nostra had a more lavish budget than DoD for weaponry.

In the U.S., before 1934, you could walk into a hardware store and purchase a Thompson.
