On October 17, the German Bundeswehr's Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology, and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) initiated a tender process via the European TED platform. The goal is to procure a "next-generation reconnaissance vehicle," also referred to as "SpähFz NG." This new armored vehicle is expected to provide high tactical mobility, advanced communication systems, and navigation equipment. It should also be capable of mounting a 25mm cannon.

The Bundeswehr aims for this new vehicle to succeed the Fennek armored reconnaissance vehicles, which are expected to become obsolete by the end of 2028, according to BAAINBw. The selected manufacturer will be responsible for maintaining these vehicles for two decades after the delivery of the last unit.
The timeline for this project is ambitious. The first two units should be delivered to the BAAINBw for testing before 2026. Subsequently, 90 additional units are planned for the 2027-2028 period, with an option for an additional order of 162 armored vehicles.
Interested companies have until mid-November to submit their bids. The final choice for the Bundeswehr's new reconnaissance vehicle is expected to be announced no earlier than the second half of 2024.
According to Soldat & Technik, Rheinmetall has developed a lighter version of its Fuchs armored vehicle to respond to this tender. Other potential competitors include Patria, General Dynamics European Land Systems with the Pandur Evo, as well as a partnership between Iveco and Hensoldt.
It's worth noting that the tender does not explicitly outline the specifications expected for the "SpähFz NG." The vehicles currently under consideration by BAAINBw are significantly heavier, weighing over 20 tons and built on a 6x6 chassis.
