The German Government recently formulates the interests, principles and central areas of German policy in the Indo-Pacific region. The new guidelines are also a contribution to a possible EU-European Union overall strategy for the region, the country’s Ministry of Defense stated on September 2.

The new guidelines provide a strategic framework for Germany’s political measures in the Indo-Pacific region. « With the rise of Asia, the political and economic weights are increasingly shifting to the Indo-Pacific region. The region will become the key to shaping the international order in the 21st century, » the new guidelines say.

This is why Germany must also prepare for a possible expansion of its security policy commitment. Under the auspices of the Foreign Office, the MoD therefore played a key role in the preparation of this cross-departmental paper.

From the MoD point of view, the issue of peace and security, including free maritime routes, is of particular importance. The German government intends to expand its security policy engagement in the Indo-Pacific region. In addition to expanding security and defense policy cooperation with partners in the region, defense policy contacts in the region are to be intensified. This includes, for example, participating in exercises.

« It is time for Germany to defend its interests more vigorously, » German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer emphasized last year in her keynote address on security policy at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich. Allies and partners would expect Germany to take the initiative, provide impetus and show options, said the minister. With the measures that have now been adopted, this approach is reflected in the official guidelines of the federal government. These offer some points of contact and offers for expanding cooperation in the region.

With a view to the partners in the region, Minister Kramp-Karrenbauer had already campaigned in Munich last year to show more presence in the region together with the allies. « Because we have an interest in ensuring that existing law is respected, » said the minister.

For the record, German Navy’s F124 Sachsen-class frigate Hamburg was set to conduct a five month deployment in the Indo-Pacific waters, including to Reunion island and Australia, this year. However, due to COVID-19, this deployment has been postponed. Instead, the frigate deployed in early August to take part in European Union’s EUNAVFOR MED IRINI operation in the Mediterranean Sea.

. .
For me its complete bullshit. The same bullshit as german troops are in Afghanistan or somewhere else. The German Navy is for protecting german trade ships at war times and defending the german motherland from attacks from sea. And thats it.

Germany is thinking way too much ... first it needs to modernize its military and add more arms, particularly to the army and air force. Why are you thinking about Asia when you're forces are in poor condition to defend against the likes of an imminent threat?

I honestly think we're going to get a front seat in the rise of a new Germany.

For decades Germany has tried to avoid the reins of power, associating it with the bloody past of failed Imperial and Nazi regimes.

And yet, the EU needs Germany. It needs it all the more now. With an increasingly schizophrenic America, so does the World.

In late 2019, Macron basically begged the Germans show more authoritative leadership, as with the yellow vest riots, he lacked the political capital to push for the EU integration agenda at home, much less abroad.

I was shocked when Germany stepped up during the Covid crisis, announcing and spearheading the economic stimulus plan which aims to rejuvenate the EU economy and leave behind the divisive 'austerity' that Germany pushed during the GFC in 2008.

I say this sudden proactive interest in the Indo-Pacific is just part of a gargantuan shifting of gears in Germany's policy, be it Domestic, EU, or International.

Germany doesn't have the capability. It's military is not strong enough to compete in Asia-Pacific.

They forget that APAC is the home of big boys. Small countries in APAC are giants in Europe. Forget China; Japan has a population size almost the same as Russia and South Korea is the size of France. And China has a larger GDP and military than India+Japan+South Korea+Australia+ASEAN combined.
