Russia supports separatist authorities in two Georgian breakaway regions: Abkhazia and South Ossetia

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg says Georgia is making progress in its bid to join the Western alliance.

The move is firmly opposed by Russia, but Stoltenberg said it was for Georgia and the 28 NATO allies to decide whether the country becomes a member.

Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary-General: "So, whether Georgia is going to become a member of NATO or not is something which is up to Georgia and 28 NATO allies to decide. It's not up to any other nation to veto or to interfere in that process. And we are continuing to work on that, with a membership action plan, with a substantial package. And Georgia is making progress."

Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili said Russia's meddling in territories which used to be part of the Soviet Union was behnd the NATO membership bid.

Giorgi Margvelashvili, Georgian President: "We have discussed some of the most problematic new developments in the region by Russia signing agreements with occupied territories. And let me thank you and your colleagues on being very concrete on supporting Georgia's territorial sovereignty and discussing these issues."

Georgian forces began two weeks of joint military exercises with the United States in the South Caucasian republic on Monday.
