Journalists outraged over discrimination in full-court reference coverage

Farewell footage was not given to any other channel

Chief Justice Iftikhar Chudary gave his last speech in this full court reference event and no other channel even Associated press or state run tv Pakistan television was given this exclusive footage

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court of Pakistan’s staff on Wednesday flouted relevant constitutional provision by providing footage of the full-court reference to only one particular channel(Geo), SAMAA reports.

A full-court reference was held today in honor of the outgoing Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. The reference was held in-camera.

But according to our correspondent Supreme Court’s staff facilitated only one channel to have video coverage of the event depriving other media outlets including the state-run Pakistan Television.

Journalists from other media channels are not pleased over the incident, saying fundamental rights of journalists were violated. They demanded that action should be taken against those responsible for this act.

Some say it is a conspiracy to create a controversy on the last day in office of the Chief Justice of Pakistan.

Abdul Hameed, Staff Officer of the Chief Justice, failed to satisfy journalists during his brief media talk after the full-court reference.

He, strangely, maintained that one cameraman ran away with the footage of the event.

Nadeem Malik, senior anchor of Samaa, demanded an inquiry into the incident. He regretted partisan approach of the Supreme Court administration, saying favoritism should be avoided in such types of important events.

Reacting on the incident, Justice (retd) Saeeduz Zaman Siddiqui also said that Supreme Court staff don’t have prerogative to provide footage to only one channel. He reminded that under Article 25 of the Constitution every citizen enjoys equal rights.

Journalists need to look at their own short-comings. Rather than be grumpy about someone's success, better try to find reasons for own failure. SC is not a subsidiary of Geo News.

Another senseless and reactionary thread by someone who is over-fond of PTI sensationalism.

I wish you would spend some time questioning your childish assumptions. You may start by a review of Malik Riaz's planted interview by Mubashar Luqman.

ex-Chief Justice never kept his loyalty to Geo hidden. After all Geo played a bug role in standing against Musharraf Govt. to bring him back to his seat, it is obvious that he was pretty much tilted towards Geo Network. He has even given some decisions that lead to raising questions on these favors for Geo, but then who wanted a suit for contempt of court opened against them! :police:

If it were a proper thread, I might reply properly. Seeing that it has been started by a hyperactive PTI jyala kid, how can anyone take it seriously. It is just your average conspiracy-mongering. Nothing else. Standard mode of operation for you. That is why you get no respect. You are here only for PTI propaganda and doing a good job for PML-N instead. Go on keep posting BS threads. Be sure to quote ML in each one of them, since he has such HIGH credibility.

You fail to understand. I give up. You are beyond help.

You fail to understand. I give up. You are beyond help.

Irrespective of your political affiliations, it is unfair and in total denial of Article 25 in excluding all channels of Pakistani media except Geo News to cover the full court reference event. It has been a source of controversy for an already controversial Chief Justice, notoriously known for his biased decisions and suing everyone who asks any questions regarding his ridiculously biased decisions under "contempt of court" .. Only his son, Arsalan Iftikhar's case is an example enough for this aspect.

Debate on Geo's exclusive coverage yesterday continues. @KlasraRauf has the courage to say every reporter looks for a scoop. Nothing wrong

Rauf Klasra ‏@KlasraRauf3m
@affandawood @fsherjan Many times incamera parliament sessions r held but reporters manage to get inside stories. Reporter has no boudaries
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

May I point out that Rauf Klasra is one of the most respected journalists. He takes no sides. Criticizes everyone on merit, be it MNS, AAZ, IK, AH, you name it. He has more credibility than most of the partisans mucking about on this issue. See the following tweet:

mohammedhanif ‏@mohammedhanif9 Dec
On some days it seems in pak mainstream media @KlasraRauf is the only reporter still interested in reporting. Everyone else is an expert

One may disagree with M. Hanif (writer - "A case of exploding mangoes"), but one can not dispute his observation and acumen.

ISLAMABAD: Newly appointed Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, after taking oath, took his first suo motu notice against the leakage of Full Court Reference proceedings footage.

The chief justice directed Additional Registrar Supreme Court Muhammad Ali to hold an inquiry into the alleged incident so as to determine its authenticity and take action against the delinquents, if found guilty.

The Chief Justice took notice on a note of Registrar, Supreme Court, containing the details that it is widely reported in the electronic and print media that a certain Media Group was given access inside the Court Room No1 to have exclusive footage of the proceedings of Full Court Reference on December 11.

Earlier during the day Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani took oath as the 21st Chief Justice of Pakistan.

President Mamnoon Hussain administered the oath of office to Justice Tassaduq, the senior most judge of the apex court after Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry stepped down a day earlier.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, former chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, members of the federal cabinet, envoys of foreign countries and Supreme Court judges attended the oath-taking ceremony held at the Aiwan-e-Sadr.

Chaudhry, originally appointed in 2005 during the military rule of Pervez Musharraf and who came to be one of the architects of the former general's downfall, has divided opinion.

Some have praised him for fearlessly taking on politicians and security agencies, while others have criticised him for exceeding the proper authority of the chief justice and interfering in political matters.

Legal circles see the 64-year-old Jillani to be a far quieter presence.

Justice Jillani has been a Supreme Court judge since 2004 and, like Chaudhry, was sacked when Musharraf imposed emergency rule in November 2007.

Prime Minister Nawaz and President Mamnoon congratulated Justice Jillani after he was sworn in today.
