Bribery row: Vindictive army chief seeks to damage national interest out of personal pique

General Vijay Kumar Singh began to plan his revenge on February 10, the day the Supreme Court struck down his effort to prolong his tenure as Army chief through a change in the date of his birth. His rage was silent and invisible. He planned his offensive with military precision. He seemed indifferent to the fact that, in the process, sensitive national interests might get hurt.

His three-pronged offensive was well timed: the week beginning March 26. Parliament would be in session, but the spotlight would have shifted from the Budget and be available to his controversies. Delhi would also host the BRICS Summit that week; and a military-civilian confrontation would get sensational play before the heads of China and Russia, to the acute embarrassment of the Indian Government. This last was designed for maximum outrage.

The general's strategy included revival of an incident in 2011, a claim that he had received a bribe offer from a retired general. The second weapon was a top secret letter he had written to the Prime Minister warning of the perilous state of the Army's defence preparedness. The third missile was the revelation of a top secret force in the Northeast, formed for conflict with China, at a time when Chinese President Hu Jintao was a state guest in New Delhi.

On March 28, the army chief forwarded a complaint to CBI against Lt-Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag, commander of the Dimapur-based 3 Corps, based on a letter sent by a Trinamool Congress member of Parliament to Defence Minister A.K. Antony over a year ago. It related to procurement scams in a secret unit called the 'Special Frontier Force' (SFF) operating under Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), comprising Tibetan guerrillas. Officially, the Government denies the existence of this covert SFF. General V.K. Singh's anger was directed at those who would benefit from the fact that he would retire in May. He wanted to destroy his potential successors, and if in the process the Army and India got hurt, so be it. Lt-Gen Suhag is the second down the line of succession. He takes over as army chief from General V.K. Singh's successor, Lt-Gen Bikram Singh, in 2014. The army chief, who retires on May 31, claims that officers who follow him have been helped by vested interests.

yeah make VKs as scape goat...
a mentally retarded person has wrote this article whose mouth is shut by money

Pathetic caption by India today. Should have been ''Gen Singh's war on defence corruption'', instead. Ofcourse it's sad that dirty linen is washed in public. Then again.. if it wasn't for that, CBI wouldn't have registered a case against Tatra, despite repeated complaints!!

To be fair, he has well and truly overstepped his mark, the Indian armed forces are apolitical, that's just how it is, however his actions in the last few months have well and truly exceeded this remit. He can say all he likes after he has completed his tour and once he no longer represents the IA, for now he needs to STFU.

If he kept his mouth shut, would anything be done regarding the critical shortages and obsolescence? Now the whole nation knows about it, and the political class is facing the heat, and people in charge of defence aquisitions are being shaken out of their complacency. Hopefully we will see procurements happen faster from now. It is not the first time he is speaking about this, we have been reading reports of low ammo and outdated equipments for years now. Has anything been done in this regard? Has anybody shown any urgency about it? Now all of a sudden the entire country is asking why our nation is in such a vulnerable state, and politicians are having to face the heat of the electorate.

Retired generals and admirals have been saying this over and over on TV and through other avenues till they are hoarse. Has anybody taken any notice? That's exactly what would have happened if he too had waited until retirement to bring this issue to the forefront.

And by the way he completely denies that he leaked the letter, and has asked for a full fledged enquiry into that, and called it treasonable.

Very stupid headline.

Gen VK Singh is the most honest and to the point Army Chief we have got in recent times.

He care about India more then his career and corrupt Babus and Netas are for his head.

But they forget that he is a former commando don't mess with Gen.

Gen VK Singh respect for u sir, People of India are with you.

surprised how a retired military personnel could try to inflict such a tom-foolery on his own country's military.....

your Gen. Singh also seems to be at cohoots with the sardaar....it was actually the Gen. that authorized the ''memo leak'' regarding substandard air defence systems ;)

He is not retired, if you are talking about general VKS.

Everyone is accusing him of having leaked it, but he himself has strongly denied the allegation, and called for a CBI probe into the leak. Until the results of that are published, we can't really say who did it.

AK Antony seems to be standing on shaky ground. He may have to resign.

youre right -- im just speculating. Maybe im just cynical ;)

who stood to gain from it though

and i was referring to the retired gen. who tried giving your COAS kickbacks for substandard mil vehicles

The country.

Also TATRA is expensive bu not sub standard. If it was why it is in the service of armies around the world including KSA & Israel.

1) who stood to gain from it though

2) and i was referring to the retired gen. who tried giving your COAS kickbacks for substandard mil vehicles

1) That's the whole point - what benefit does VKS gain by leaking this letter? Showing the govt in a bad light is what everybody accuses his motivation was. But is that what happened? Everyone is criticising him more than the government. And if it turns out from the enquiry that he did leak it, then the consequences would be unthinkable for him, maybe even a jail sentence. I don't think he would risk all that just to show the government in bad light for a few days. After all he topped the commando course at belgaum AND the Ranger school in USA, this is a man who knows to fight wisely.

2) I think he was a retired Lt general. But yes, that is shocking indeed.

India Today is actually pro BJP. And I trust this article than VK Singh

Even BJP is not whiter than white when it comes to defence deals. This is coming from me.. a staunch BJP supporter. We all know about the kargil coffin scam or the tehelka sting op. All politicians sing from same hymn sheet when it comes to safeguarding their personal interest irrespective of what party they belong. We all know how long it took for the parliament to pass office of profit bill & make it into a law to safeguard personal interest of politicians from different parties.
