NEW DELHI: While Narendra Modi goes around the country enthusing supporters and trying to win over the undecided, BJP and RSS bigwigs are said to be drawing the contours of what a possible government led by the party could look like. These leaders, seemingly sure of a BJP victory, have constituted a possible Modi cabinet as they try and get a sense of who's in and who could be out.

Whether a Modi government will actually come to pass will be known only on May 16, when votes are counted. ET is merely reflecting the views of those engaged in the exercise.

Central to the discussion is party elder LK Advani, who will not allow the new leadership to sideline him.

It's more or less confirmed, the leaders insist, that he will become chairman of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, irrespective of the election result. Sources in the party claim that this is one assurance that Advani sought for agreeing to choose Gandhinagar as his parliamentary seat.

The imagined cabinet, according to a number of senior BJP and RSS leaders, looks somewhat like this: finance for Arun Jaitley, defence for Rajnath Singh, home for Manohar Parrikar, external affairs for Sushma Swaraj, human resources or urban development for Nitin Gadkari and agriculture for Sushil Modi. Investors will watching out keenly for who gets to become finance minister. Jaitley, for instance, has indicated that he may be open to 49% foreign direct investment in insurance, something that was promised by the UPA but couldn't be implemented.

A Modi government, if it happens, is also likely to see Arun Shourie, probably as commerce minister. Apart from Goa chief minister Parrikar, Modi may bring other BJP leaders from the states to the Centre. Rajya Sabha members Smriti Irani, Purushottam Rupala and Piyush Goyal may also get cabinet berths. Leaders who were ministers in the previous NDA government such as Shahnawaz Hussain are also likely to be in the new one.

Modi's close aide Amit Shah is likely to hold an important position in the government and is tipped to be a minister without portfolio in the PMO, working in close proximity with Modi. "However, if BJP manages a very good show in Uttar Pradesh, where Shah is the incharge, then he may be elevated to the post of BJP president as well. This way Modi will be in control of both the government and the party," the leader added.

Modi is clear about good governance, said a senior BJP leader on condition of anonymity. At the time of government formation, it won't be about pandering to egos but getting the best man for the job, the person said. "His focus would be on delivering on his promises as he doesn't like to be on the losing side of a challenge."

Bureaucrats who served the Sangh and the party well may also get generously rewarded in a Modi government and be made ministers of state.

This may include home for RK Singh, external affairs for former IFS officer Hardeep Puri and defence for former general VK Singh. Second-rung leaders such as Varun Gandhi, Dharmendra Pradhan and JP Nadda will also look to be accommodated.

I think we should all wait for the BJP to first win the election or at least emerge as the largest party and then Form the govt. :P ..............nahi tho why not make me the Prime Minister ? :D

I would like to see VK singh as a Defence Minister..

Terrible choice. Too close to his retirement. No point in pissing off the present CoAS & the next in line. Should be a top level senior politician though I would have preferred Manohar Parrikar in this position rather than the imagined one at home(if he were to leave Goa). Don't think Shourie will be back. Piyush Goyal must get a meaty ministry, preferably an economic one.

Everything is good except Defence Ministry. Varun Gandhi is best man to be Defence Minister IMO. Here is one of his article in hindustan times regarding defence. I am impressed the way he thinks.

Varun Gandhi? Hmmm. I am not sure of his credibility though. I read the document. He want to change our strategic restraint formula. It aint easy. And am not sure how he will make DRDO work. They consists of scientist, and research will naturally take time. Joint planning is one good point he makes. But if you ask me I prefer VK Singh, and I hope Subramanya Swami is not given external affairs.

Sushma Swaraj or Dr. Subramanian Swarmy as external affairs ministers, would definitely be good for better Indo Lanka relations.. Under the BJP govt.. Very pragmatic leaders

Where is Dr. Subramanian swamy ?

We need him as either Finance Minister, Commerce Minister, Industry minister, Law minister or External Affair Minister.
He might end up getting none of the above. There needs to be a ministry without portfolio.. & he should be given free hand to go after Gandhis & Congressis , unearth their scams & fix them up in the court of law. He should be given free access to investigating & law enforcement agencies. If need be, create a separate ministry & call it Congress accountability ministry!

No you don't. India is better off not giving him any ministries. He's not reliable.

That would be the Law Ministry or the Home Ministry.........he would be excellent in both, But I personally would love for him to be head of planning commission and Finance Minister. '

or External Affair Minister.

Yes I do. He is FAR more Reliable than MMS or Sonia or Rahul or most of the BJP leaders.

He is pretty vocal about who he is, what he stands for and what his plans are. There is NO surprise about him. Moreover he has proven himself with decades of public service.

I find him the most reliable among of all the mentioned 'leaders'.

Dude, I know him personally. He tends to exaggerate and that too deliberately to prove his point. In any case I wouldn't want him to be any minister, my personal preference.

Gaon basa nahin, lootere pahle a gaye !

The people havent yet spoken and people are allotting ministries !

He might be your uncle .....how is that relevant ? What is your own credibility to pitch it against Dr. Subramaniyan swamy ? ...... do you even know how ridiculous you sound ?

Everybody exaggerates to prove a point. That is how points are proven. That is how cases are won in court.

When BJP says they are striving for Ram Rajya ....everybody knows its an exaggeration., They say it to prove a point to make a point.

Use of Hyperbole to make a point is an acceptable form of dialogue. If someone is not smart enough to understand Rhetorical questions and Figure of speech, they should stick to conversing with someone of their own level.

You are free to have your own opinion ..... but to make unsubstantiated claims against a distinguished man and to claim that your own credibility is better than his; so we consider your opinion more seriously than his is opening yourself to ridicule.
