ISLAMABAD: Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa talked to US Defence Secretary James Mattis by telephone for 20 minutes, said a statement released by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Thursday.

Gen Bajwa congratulated Mr Mattis on assuming the office of US defence secretary and expressed the hope that his vast experience in the field would be of “great value” for the region.

For his part, Secretary Mattis recalled the sacrifices rendered by the people and armed forces of Pakistan in the fight against terrorists and praised their resilience. He also lauded the role the Pakistan Army has played in combating the scourge of terrorism.

Both Gen Bajwa and Mr Mattis reaffirmed their commitment towards the common goal of bringing about peace in the region and discussed measures aimed at achieving that goal.

They also underlined the need for continued engagement at multiple levels between the two countries.

Top US commander in Afghanistan calls for review of ties with Pakistan
Meanwhile, the top US commander in Afghanistan has called for a comprehensive review of Washington’s ties with Islamabad. He also said he needed several thousand more international troops in order to break a stalemate in the long war with Taliban, indicating that the matter might soon be put before President Donald Trump.

Army General John Nicholson, who leads US and international forces in Afghanistan, acknowledged the Taliban gains over the past year, when deployed US forces were reduced even as security deteriorated.

Gen Nicholson said he still had enough US troops to carry out counterterrorism missions against Al Qaeda and other militant targets, but not enough to properly advise Afghan forces on the ground.

“We have a shortfall of a few thousand,” he told the Senate Armed Services Committee in Washington on Thursday. He added those forces could both be drawn from US forces as well as from allies.

Gen Nicholson noted that Mr Mattis would soon speak to allies and suggested that the secretary might visit Afghanistan in the coming weeks.

That could help Mattis prepare his own recommendation to Trump, who has sharply criticised past US administrations for their handling of conflicts in the Muslim world but has also pledged to eradicate Islamist militants around the globe.

Policy on Pakistan

Gen Nicholson called for a “holistic review” of the relationship with Pakistan, echoing longstanding US concerns that the Haqqani network, a militant group, enjoyed “sanctuary in areas in that country along the Afghan border”.

“Our complex relationship with Pakistan is best assessed through a holistic review,” he said, adding that addressing US concerns about Pakistan was at the top of his list of priorities.

The United States has cut both military and economic aid to Pakistan sharply in recent years, reflecting mounting US frustration with the nuclear-armed nation.

Someone please teach Indian what's the meaning of Isolation! :coffee:

Make Afganistan a buffer country again like the way the British did. The primary stakeholders are the USA, Russia, China and Pak. The protocol should clearly state that nobody should interfere with the internal affairs. A strong center is out of sync with the Afgan mindset. So, a collective body at the center would cater for few staffs of common concern. Local agencies, tribes need to be strengthened and should independently rule over their areas. If they want outside help they need to keep peace among themselves. The most amiable guys will be rewarded financially and hostile folks punished. I think this is the only way to go forward...

India might not like the idea, and without India nothing will move forward in South Asia and India has tight grip across South Asia except in Pakistan

The solution for Afghan (Rouge region ) is quite simple

Flush out , rouges and then make it a new Province of Pakistan.
People of Afghan can retain their identity as a province, they already play cricket

We setup 10 Military bases train 40,000-50,000 under our own command. Which can then lookafter the security with the man power from regional provincial force

Problem is fixed forever permenent fix by making it next province of Pakistan

The Afghan folks routinely have ties with folks in KPK etc distant or close relatives etc and travel already openly (or they used to)

  • Otherwise the rouge region is just continuous bleeding point sort of like a duct tape fix

The strategy of dealing with 2-3 factions or regional players has failed miserably

Watch its gonna happen in coming months. USA only has to remove India from its lap in Afghanistan and India suddenly will have zero influence in Afghanistan. After all USA invited India to Afg, it just has to un-invite India. India has been buying influence in Afghanistan using money, any country with money can do that.

India is a nobody more like a nuisance when it comes to Afghanistan. Your only stake in Afghanistan is to keep terrorism alive in Pakistan.

Afganistan is in the Central Asia...

Afghanistan is not Central Asia.

Even if assuming Afghanistan is in Central Asia, India has huge huge influence in Afghanistan.

 India is nobody in Afghanistan? Go check your doctor.

Not much will be different even if Hasina is out. BD cannot match much larger India. The better strategy for smaller states, when sizes are disproportionately different, is to have good relations with larger state. Even in case of Pakistan, the only reason Pakistan is forced to fight India is because of Kashmir. If not for Kashmir, I have no doubts that Pakistan would have been in India's sphere of influence

But who in hell cares about what poverty-stricken Indians like or dislike. No one has time to waste for worthless idiots. If Indians want to stay in their own imaginary world, it's good for them (actually for us too). But the world course flows under its own dynamics. If the whole Western powers, with all their resources and modern technology), could not control Afghanistan - leave alone the whole south east asia much less than south asia- how these poverty-stricken, mentally dull and technologically borrowers/beggars can control even a province in Afghanistan. They keep begging Iranians and Afghanis for having some traction on Afghan soil. They support and use some disgruntled Afghan elements (that you can find in any country) for staging terrorist attacks in Pakistan. And that's it. If this dude calls it a tight Indian grip on south asia, we can only at this retard.

No it is you who needs a reality check. India neither shares a border with Afghanistan nor has Indians anything in common with the Afghans. You are using it only as a proxy to destabilise Pakistan which is not going to work for too longer considering how talibans are gaining the upper hand. Pakistan Russia and China are on the same page when it comes to taliban. Guess who is not India and nobody gives a ****.
