KARACHI:

US Ambassador to Pakistan David Hale has said that many of General Electric (GE) locomotives being delivered to Pakistan Railways will support power plants and improve the rail company’s capacity to carry even more cargo to the industrial heartland.
“The delivery of these locomotives is also great news for US private sector’s engagement with Pakistan, enhancing the ties between our countries,” the ambassador said at a ceremony at the Karachi Cantonment Railway Station where he dedicated the GE locomotives on Friday.

US Consul General for Karachi Grace Shelton and Pakistan Railways Chairperson Parveen Agha were present on the occasion.

Hale highlighted how US technology and equipment would play a key role in the long-term infrastructure upgrades that would fuel Pakistan’s sustainable economic development.

“We are proud to support the government’s goals to strengthen and modernise Pakistan’s transportation infrastructure with the early delivery and commissioning of GE’s Evolution Series locomotives,” said Sarim Sheikh, President and CEO of GE Pakistan and Central Asia region.

“Evo locomotives provide better fuel efficiency and longer overhaul cycles than any other locomotives in their class, substantially reducing both the costs and environmental impact of transporting essential freight.”

A representative of Pakistan Railways noted that Pakistan was the first country in South Asia to import and use the GE Evolution Series locomotives, which would help with modernisation and connectivity of Pakistan Railways.

In June 2015, GE signed a deal with Pakistan Railways for the delivery of 55 state-of-the-art diesel locomotives. The 4,500 horsepower locomotives are fully built and assembled in the US.

They will be shipped to Karachi Port in several phases throughout 2017. First seven locomotives arrived two months ahead of the scheduled date at the port on January 23, 2017.

Whats wrong with chinese engines? Low cost, low transportation, easy assistance.

A consignment of seven modern locomotives reached Karachi from the United States to reinforce Pakistan Railways’ existing fleet.

“Pakistan will receive a total of 55 locomotives in different phases from the US. The remaining 48 are expected to be handed over to the Pakistan Railways by June 2017,” official sources in the Ministry of Railways told

The consignment comprised 4,000 horsepower diesel-powered modern locomotives produced by General Electric with a 676mm gauge. The 137 tonne six-axle locomotives are designed for a maximum speed of 120 km per hour and are expected to provide better fuel efficiency and longer maintenance intervals than Pakistan Railways’ current fleet.

They are inferior quality. PR has many problems with them and have opted to go with US locomotives.

Chinese diesel engines failed in Pakistan, perhaps due to the higher temperature regions as compared to China while China itself is using more and more electric trains... Pakistan is stuck with diesel engines due to corruption, criminal neglect and deliberate sabotage by the corrupt political elite of the country of this excellent mode of transportation for masses.

Because the brightest individuals in the Maintenance shops pour old oil into the engines that they removed and made a "dua or puk" over.

Can't have Godless Communist locomotives in an Islamic Republic.

Running on endless infusions of bailouts. Someone's dua for Pakistan to have a railways is being answered.

What do you think will happen in a few years when there's a new political dynasty in charge and wants to make some money siphoning off the Railways bailouts?

Failing Chinese products are a reflection of China. Having a developed locomotive industry is vital for continued and maintaining economic growth. For a country that is mastering and pushing the limits of high speed trains failing to make a robust 60mph locomotive who'll be the laughing stock?

Not all countries have an electric supply for rails. Diesel locos are king in many parts of the world.
Better?

Your initial post was nothing but cheap and disgusting, and had absolutely nothing to do with the issue at hand, which is corruption.

But some people can't control their hatred, they can't let any opportunity to malign Islam go. Good to see you showing your true colors.

Hopefully we can see more GE Locomotives in action in Pakistan , Made in USA not assembled else where in india

We'll send you some WAGs. They look ugly but they are reliable as a mother. U can poor gutter oil in them and they will still run.

The contract will allow the first 100 locomotives to be imported or assembled using imported kits, but the rest must be built in India with mostly Indian content.

.
GE is building factory in India that will churn out 1000 locomotives(4500 and 6000 hp ones),maybe Pakistan can do a bulk order and get a factory too
Well we can't expect that from the current mindless goons but in future I hope so and I would rather favour Alston with whom i have done some projects. They are a whole package
