Panchayat poll rivalry took a hideous turn in a village in Mirzapur district when the minor daughter of a winning woman block development council (BDC) candidate was allegedly gang-raped by her mother's rivals. She later killed herself following police inaction.

Sources said the daughter of the BDC member was allegedly raped by two men of a rival group on Wednesday night. When the police refused to file an FIR against the accused who had been named, the depressed girl committed suicide on Friday. It was only after her death that cops arrested the two accused.

"The girl, a class 11 student, was kidnapped on Wednesday by two men when she was asleep in her house. They took her to a field and raped her. She returned home and told her mother about the assault and also named the two accused as those belonging to her mother's rival group," sources said.

On Thursday, the BDC member along with her daughter and other family members went to the police station to lodge a complaint. But, the girl's mother said, instead of taking down the complaint, the police gave only verbal assurances and asked them to return home. Traumatized and humiliated, the girl hanged herself in her house.

Cops finally lodged an FIR against Pappu Bahelia and Bindu Bahelia under relevant sections of IPC and POCSO Act 2012 and arrested both of them. The girl's body was sent for postmortem.

Contacted on Saturday, Mirzapur SP Arvind Sen admitted that the girl was gang-raped to avenge poll defeat. He told TOI that the accused were relatives of the losing candidate in BDC election. On the delay in police FIR, he said that the matter was being investigated and action would be taken in this regard.

A court in India has sentenced seven men to death for the brutal rape and murder in February of a Nepalese woman.

The 28-year-old victim was suffering from depression and had been undergoing treatment when she went missing in the northern Haryana state.

Her body was found in a field, three days later. An autopsy revealed that she was gang-raped and had stones, blades and sticks forced inside her.

The female judge said she wanted to send a strong message to the public.

"I award the death sentence to all these accused in the case, and they should be hanged till death," said Judge Seema Singhal, according to the Hindustan Times.

"Besides a judicial officer, I am also a human being and can hear the groan of the victim," Judge Singhal added.

"Women are still facing crime and discrimination from males in our society and we still see gender bias in our system, but the judgement should send a strong message to the people and that is the need of the hour."

An eighth accused attacker, a minor, is being tried in a juvenile court. A ninth suspect killed himself soon after his arrest.

The victim had travelled to Rohtak in Haryana state a few months before the attack, to live with her sister while she underwent treatment for depression at a local hospital.

The doctor who carried out the post mortem examination told India's the NDTV channel at the time he had "never seen such a horrific case" in his 29-year-long career.

The death sentences came on the same day that India's top court rejected an appeal against the release of the youngest attacker in a fatal gang-rape of a student in New Delhi in 2012.

The savage attack on Jyoti Singh, who was travelling on a bus with a male friend, sparked a huge public outcry in India. The youngest of her attackers was sentenced to three years - the maximum allowed for a minor under Indian law - and released on Sunday.

Singh's mother Asha, who revealed her daughter's name, led protests over the weekend against the man's release.

Scrutiny of sexual violence in India has grown since the Delhi bus attack and the outrage that followed prompted the government to tighten the law.

But experts say tougher laws have failed to bring down the number of rape cases and a series of high-profile crimes have taken place since.

Girls film rape of friend, upload clip online

Bareilly: In an incident that has shocked both parents and cops probing the matter, two schoolgirls allegedly filmed the rape of a friend at her house and uploaded the entire sequence online. A report has been filed at the local police station and the two girls have been arrested. However, the youth who allegedly raped the friend is absconding.

In his complaint at the Shergarh police station here, the father of the 16-year-old survivor alleged that her two friends called on her when she was alone at home as he and his wife were away. They were accompanied by a youth. The trio locked her room from inside and the youth raped her at gunpoint while the two girls filmed it and uploaded the crime online.

The incident allegedly happened on December 18 but has come out in the open only now. The survivor's friends are from the same locality and are said to be "close" to her. That is why, her father said, his daughter had no inkling of their intentions when they arrived accompanied by a local youth.

Before the girl could react, her friends allegedly bolted the room from inside and the youth, identified only as Aman as of now, allegedly whipped out a country-made pistol and went on to rape her in the presence of her two friends.

However, instead of coming to her aid, her friends allegedly took out their mobile phones and filmed the rape. They left the spot thereafter, leaving the victim battered and traumatized.

Upendra Singh, inspector, Shergarh police station, said, "She went into a state of depression and refused to disclose the incident to her parents."

It was only when the survivor's two friends uploaded the video clip on the internet and it went viral that the girl's family came to know about the ghastly deed.

Singh added, "We have filed a case under section 450 (trespass in order to commit offence, punishable with imprisonment for life), section 452 (trespass, assault, wrongful restraint) section 376 (rape), section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and also section 4 of the POCSO Act along with section 66 A of the IT Act. The two girls have been arrested and are being questioned for their role in the incident. They will be produced before the magistrate on Sunday. A hunt is on to nab Aman."

Shocking!!!!!!! Where are we heading?

The best way to curb such travesties is to have " ZERO TOLERANCE " and HANG few perpetrators and this will stop immediatly.

BTW , this is not a INDIA / PAKISTAN Problem. Rapes are endemic in South Asia and strong measures must be taken in both countries to squash this menace to half the Population of our two countries
