Full-fledged army action planned in Khyber Agency

ISLAMABAD: The civil and military leadership of Pakistan has decided to launch a full-fledged army action in restive Khyber Agency near Afghan border, Samaa reported Thursday.

Sources said the decision was taken at a high-level meeting presided over by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif earlier today in Islamabad.

The meeting, which reviewed the ongoing Zarb-e-Azb operation besides various security matters, was attended by Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif, DG ISI-designate, Lt. Gen. Rizwan Akhtar, other high officials and federal cabinet ministers.

Sources in military said the army is resolute for an indiscriminate action against militants hiding in the tribal belt, a hub of Taliban and Al Qaida militants, claiming that they are involved in terrorism activities at Peshawar, Charsadda and Hangu.

Officials said the action will continue till complete elimination of terrorists.

Earlier today, Pakistan military said it had killed 21 militants in air strikes in Khyber Agency, a region where it has been battling militant groups for more than a decade.

The attacks took place early morning in the Tirah valley of Khyber district, where the Taliban and another banned militant group, Lashkar-e-Islam, have taken refuge, the military said in a statement.

In June, the army began an operation in the North Waziristan agency after a bloody raid on Karachi Airport ended faltering peace talks between the government and militants.

North Waziristan is a major base for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (Pakistani Taliban).
