India Crosses 5 Gigawatt Mark for Solar Installations: Study

NEW DELHI: The cumulative installed capacity of solar power in India has crossed the 5 Gigawatt (GW) mark.

"While total commissioned utility solar capacity in India reaches 4.7 GW; rooftop capacity stands at 525 MW. In 2015 year to date, close to 2 GW solar capacity has been commissioned," Consultancy firm Bridge To India (BTI) said.

BTI Managing Director Vinay Rustagi said in the statement, "Solar sector has got great momentum with capacity addition in 2015 more than doubling up over last year and total pipeline of over 15 GW of projects under bidding-cum-development."

Encouraged by falling costs and growing need for green energy, states like Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have all announced substantial policy initiatives, he said.

Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh have historically been the front runners, but the four southern Indian states are expected to dominate the market over next 2 years.

As of today, the country has a solar project pipeline of 15.7 GW. The financial year 2016-17 will be Indian solar market's transition year: annual capacity addition could top 6 GW with India becoming one of the leading solar nations worldwide, it said.

In the rooftop sector, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Gujarat are leading the total installed capacity.

In 2015, about 240 MW of rooftop capacity was added despite lack of any major rooftop specific initiatives.

"Consumer awareness has improved significantly and both business and residential consumers are keen to tap into rooftop solar. We expect the market to grow at over 50 per cent rate in the next few years," it said.

>> Tata Solar Power has commissioned a 12 MW array covering 1.621 million square feet of various roof profiles, roof types and truss frames which is world’s largest solar rooftop array.

>> Solar energy in MP is @Rs.5 per unit against @Rs.6.10 per unit - lowest across the globe! The price of solar power has seen a global decline in the last few years with India too witnessing a dramatic fall – fastest in the world – since 2010 when the Jawaharlal Nehru Solar Mission was launched. A unit of solar energy cost Rs 17 then.

I wont support such growth if we hv to keep buying chinese solar panels.

wait when people start eating solar panels

I wont support such growth if we hv to keep buying chinese solar panels.

In 2014-15, India imported $820.95 million worth of cells and modules out of which 73% (or $603 million) came from China. Other countries on which India depends heavily for import of solar panels include Taiwan and Malaysia. The reason for the surge in imports and lack of domestic manufacturing is that the import of PV's is absolutely duty free and according to the norms only government-owned companies are required to use Indian-made panels as per a minimum supply requirement.

Several initiatives have been taken for promoting domestic production that include reduction/exemption of custom and excise duty on several input raw materials required for manufacturing of cells and modules. The government also provides capital subsidy to manufacturers under special incentive package scheme (SIPS) & Modified Special Incentive Package Scheme (M—SIP).

The increase in manufacturing facility for solar cells and modules will bring in an investment of about Rs 30,000 crore and create 25,000 jobs in the country. At present, manufacturing capacity of cells and modules in India is 1,386 MW and 2,756 MW, respectively.

But the situation is unlikely to improve soon though it is very noteworthy how the prices have dropped so drastically!
