Tuesday, April 02, 2013 - LahorePakistan Muslim League-N not ready to give a chance to Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) to win a single seat from Lahore, has won the first phase of political war by getting psychological dominance over its political opponents including PPP and PTI even prior to general elections.
Knowing that a weak candidate could turn the victory into defeat, PML-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif took the affairs of awarding tickets to PML-N candidates in his own hands in Lahore and decided to contest elections from NA 120 against PTI candidate Chaudhary Asghar Gujjar while Mian Shahbaz Sharif will contest elections from NA 128 against PTI candidate Mansha Sindhu. Similarly Hamza Shahbaz Sharif will face Waleed Iqbal, a grandson of Allama Iqbal, who has submitted his nomination paper from the platform of PTI.
According to some political analysts, both the political parties PML-N and PTI have kept the ace of the trumps in secret and not showing them at this stage but apparently PML-N has opted for Big Names strategy in Lahore.
PML-N is also trying to make alliance with Jamat-e-Islami and other political parties in Lahore to tackle PTI. PML-Q and PPP alliance is also waking up and under the leadership of Mian Manzoor Watto, PPP has also hoped for some stronger presence in Lahore but failed to stir political ripples in Lahore. It was a prevailing impression few months ago that all these three constituencies were being considered having reasonable vote bank of PTI but the overall scenario in Lahore changed since the last six months as PML-N regained its strength in the capital provincial by lobbying strong local factions and initiating mega project of Metro Bus Service. Now all is going to in favor of PML-N though PPP and PML-Q alliance failed to stir ripples in Lahore. Furthermore, Jamat-e-Islami is likely a big alliance of PML-N in the upcoming general elections. This changing scenario compelled the PTI leadership to change their election strategy and Imran Khan has decided to focus Lahore to place influential and powerful candidates from all the constituencies of Lahore but apparently failed to bring a winning candidate against PML-N bigwigs except by announcing his own name to combat Mian brothers from NA 126. Imran Khan was interested to award PTI ticket to Zaheer Abbas Khokhar from the constituency of NA 128 but now Khokhar families unanimously decided to nominate Malik Karamat Khokhar their joint candidate.
Former PPP MPA and runner up of last general election from NA-128, Karamat Khokher has joined PTI along with his entire influential group of the constituency. His close relative Zaheer Abbas Khokher won from NA-128 in the 2002 general elections on PPP ticket but joined PPP-Patriot, a rebel group of party which later merged into PML-Q. In the 2008 elections, Karamat Khokher, the head of this group along with Zaheer Abbas joined PTI. Zaheer Abbas also contested a by-election on PTI ticket from PP-160. According to PTI claims, he had defeated PML-N with big margin but the ruling party rigged the elections.
To cause more dent to PTI hull in Lahore, Mian Shahbaz Sharif his also submitted his nomination paper to contest elections from the provincial constituency PP 161.
PTI has decided to give ticket to Hamid Meraj, a son of former provincial minister Mian Meraj Din from NA 123. Hamid Meraj remained part of PML-Q for almost a decade and contested three polls but remained unsuccessful. In the 2001 local body elections, Mian Hamid Meraj lost the election of union council (UC) Nazim. In the 2002 general elections, he was awarded ticket from PP-144 but lost to PML-Ns Chaudhry Akram Gujjer.
Although PTI received 322 applications, including 84 received for the National Assembly where 238 party members applied for the provincial seats, starting from PP-137 and conclude at PP-161 but maximum applications had been received from NA-126 where 16 party members want receive the party ticket.
According to the PTI sources, earlier Imran Khan wanted to contest elections from NA126 but now he changed his mind. Imran could combat elections from NA 122 or from NA 125. The sources claimed that Imran Khan could finalize NA 125, an influential constituency of PTI leader Aleem Khan.
Accordingly, NA-127 and NA-128 are semi rural constituencies and NA 129 and NA 130 are rural seats of Lahore. PTI will give a tough fight on NA-123 and NA-125 and may be on NA-128 if Zaheer Khokhar remains firm with PTI as NA-128 is a personality vote of Khokhars not much party vote of PTI.
On the other hand, NA-118-NA and NA-122 are too hard to win for PTI since they are of old Lahore and mostly Kashmiri Butt, Araen baradari, Jutt and baradaris of interior Lahore and walled city may not switch over to PTI.
From dreams to reality: PML-N wins psychological war against PTI in Lahore
