According to several sources, the French army has reportedly selected Austrian and Belgian weapons to renew its pistol and auto precision rifles inventories, after having chosen German weapons to replace its Famas. (HK416F)

The Glock 17 (most likely Gen 5) to replace the PA MAC 50.

And the FN SCAR H-PR to replace the FRF2.

Why not Glock 22? It fires S&W .40 but the barrel is replaceable with 9 mm and you get to have 2 calibres in 1 gun.

9mm is NATO standard round, Thats why US replaced 1911 in 45ACP to 9mm in 80s.

Why is France not developing it‘s own small arms?

You've got lot of reasons for that. Because with small arms, our sovereignty isn't put in question compared to a combat aircraft or a warship. (You can debate this claim though..) Because it would cost too much to maintain a small arms industry compared to the needs of the French armed forces. Because the market is already very competitive, too much arms makers and survival is hard.

There are some small arms makers (Like Verney-Carron) in France but they are too small and the financial conditions (revenues) imposed during the tenders meant they couldn't take part in them.

France has chosen battle proven and high quality weapons, yes they aren't made in France, but in serious and reliable European partners, meaning the supply will never be halted,no matter what.
