New Delhi: If Pakistan gives clemency to Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh, it could prove to be a turning point in bilateral ties, the prisoner's Pakistani lawyer says.

Awais Sheikh is arriving in India on Saturday to tell the people of India that Sarabjit Singh is an innocent man falsely charged with crimes he never committed. Sheikh will tour India for a fortnight. His book, "Sarabjit Singh: A Case of Mistaken Identity" (Rajakamal Prakashan), will be released in New Delhi.

In his book, Sheikh explains how Sarabjit was arrested and given the death sentence in Pakistan although there was no concrete evidence regarding the charges he was accused of. Sheikh will visit Chandigarh, Lucknow, Patna and Kolkata and will focus on issues that can bring India and Pakistan closer.

Of an earlier trip, Sheikh said: "When auto-wallahs and rikshaw-wallahs in India know I'm Sarabjit's lawyer, they refuse to take money from me."

If Sarabjit was pardoned, it would surely have a positive effect on India-Pakistan relations, he said.

Among those who will be present at the book launch will be Sarabjit's sister Dalbir Kaur, former Supreme Court Judge Markandey Katju, who now heads the Press Council of India, and Supreme Court lawyer Bhim Singh.

Dalbir Kaur says: "When I visited Pakistan last year, people there welcomed me and said Sarabjit was innocent. If he is pardoned, it may send positive signals to India."

Sarabjit crossed into Pakistan on August 30, 1990 -- by mistake, he says. He was caught there, accused of being an Indian spy, and blamed for bomb blasts in Lahore and Faisalabad.

A trial court sentenced him to death on November 03, 1991. The Lahore High Court dismissed his appeal. The Pakistan Supreme Court too rejected his plea in August 2005.

Then Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf rejected his clemency plea. His execution was fixed for April 30, 2008. It was put off for a month without a date being fixed.

According to the book, when his trial was ordered, the first information report mentioned his name as Manjit Singh.

The language of the chargesheet was English, which is alien to Sarabjit. The documents of Sarabjit's confessional statement do not have Sarabjit's signature; neither do they have his thumb impression.

This subject has been thrashed numerous times.

If Pak considers this man guilty he should be punished as per the law of the land.

If he has completed his sentence - let the poor man go or else hang him if thats what the law says.

But for gods sake out an end to this saga of grief & suffering of the man, his family & the nation.

what can else be expected from Zee News.

If they have Hanged Ajmal Kassab then i think we should also learn something from our Enemy.....

I think the most positive effect on India-Pakistan relations would be for Pakistan to dispatch that birdbrain Hafiz Sayeed to India with Dawood Abraham thrown in for good measure - like take one and get one free! :cheesy:

No need to dispatch anyone to India, just need to be dispatched. Period.

the pakistani govt is spineless just like the indian one ...they are not known for any tough and bold decisions , they have been doing a flip-flop just to grant an mfn status to india , forget sarabjit .

No freedom for a terrorist. And even if Pakistan releases him, Pakistan and India will not come close. There are genuine differences between the two countries and they cant come close to each other without addressing those issues. Be realistic.

Sarabjit is a spy and treated like one. Do not compare the coward barbarian Ajmal kasab with a spy. It needs a lot to become a spy and serve country and there are protocols to treat spies if get caught.

If he is a terrorist why haven't you hanged him in last 2 decades. Oh sorry, you haven't hanged a single one in last 1 decade too.

Yep! He can't be released unless and until India hands over Kashmir to Pakistan on a silver platter! :cheesy:

Same logic applies to a terrorist isn't it? A terrorist cant be handed over as a matter of goodwill. So stop your sanctimonious utterances.
