France hopeful of $6 bn Maitri missile project | Business Line

With the India-France $6 billion surface-to-air missile systems project in doldrums, France is hoping that new government’s push for “Make in India” will lead to inking of the long delayed deal.

France remains hopeful of signing the deal even though Indian armed forces are sceptical about the missile since indigenously developed Akash is in play.

Titled Maitri, the project for joint development and production between India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and France’s MBDA, was initiated in 2007 and a MoU to co-develop the surface-to-air missile (SRSAM) was signed during French President Francois Hollande’s visit to India in February last year.

Since then, the situation has changed as Indian Air Force feels that its requirements could be met by indigenous Akash surface-to-air missile weapon system.

Asked about reservations by the Air Force, a top MBDA official in Paris told PTI, “we have written back answering the issues raised by the IAF. We are hopeful that this deal would be inked soon.”

The official at MBDA also said that the “Make in India” project is apt for the deal.

He added that while the range of SRSAM will be of 40 km, Akash’s range is only 25 km.

Sources at Indian Air Force said that they have nothing against the Maitri project per se but would prefer to use the available Akash missile rather than wait for the India-French ones to come.

“The Maitri project can go on but we want the missiles and Akash is serving that purpose,” sources said.

Refusing to comment about the Maitri project, sources in DRDO said that the Akash missile is already in play and is based on a similar platform like the Maitri.

However, the French are pushing for Maitri.

“SRSAM is part of our strategic dialogue with India and is raised whenever top officials and leaders from both sides meet. We believe that a lot of information has been handed over after the new government has taken over in Delhi,” an MBDA official said.

Bro that's a December 2014 report - The DRDO-MBDA Maitri SR-SAM Project has already been cleared by the MoD in April 2015 - The programme will now move ahead principally as a ship-borne SR-SAM system. Spin off variants for the IAF and Indian Army could presumably come later. The development will be complete in three years from agreement signature. Things could move quickly given that all workshare and other components of the partnership have already been decided.

Can these be quad packed for INS Kolkata class and the others??
I personally feel that 32 VLS is too small for a 7500 ton behemoth.

Yes of course - It is primarily a ship-borne point and tactical air defense version for the Navy - The DRDO with MBDA is planning to develop 9 short-range surface-to-air missile systems (SRSAM) with 40 missiles each for Indian Navy.

The project was revived specially by the request of Indian Navy for a point air defence system after stating that Akash missile defence system is not suitable for Indian warships defence.

Meanwhile DRDO's Research Center Imarat (RCI) is known to be working on a X-band active seeker capable of engaging sea skimming anti-ship missile. (Sea skimming anti-shipping missiles are difficult to intercept because missile seekers find it hard to discriminate sea skimmers from the clutter generated by reflections from sea waves.) for Akash Mk2.

Its name notwithstanding, Akash Mk-2 will not be derivative of the Akash missile; it will be a new missile built from scratch using substantially different technologies.

A missile with an active seeker using command guidance for the initial phase of interception and then switching to a miniaturized radar fitted in its nose cone for terminal phase (end game) interception. (The current Akash missile uses command guidance for the entire interception phase which limits its effective range.)

Just add another bloody stage to your Astra BVR if you guys want more range than 25 Km of Aakash.

The Chinese managed to get 50 Km out of PL 12 by adding another stage.

BTW what radar did you guys couple with Aakash?

And what about Barak 8?

A separate SR-SAM is under development for QR/SR req of army.
Astra isn't operational yet. Also non-availability of a proved indian seeker is the main deterrence to the project.Which is also under development based on russian agat seeker.
Akash is coupled with Ranjdra radar and Barak with MFSTAR.

Vertical Launch Astra Based Air Defence System (LLQRM) is under development. Ground-based Astra air defence system will provide 360° coverage (vertical launch) and will be Fire-and-Forget system with Interception range up to 20 km.

Aakash mark II is also under development which will succeed mark I - Its name notwithstanding, Akash Mk-2 will not be derivative of the Akash missile; it will be a new missile built from scratch using substantially different technologies.

DRDO is developing an X-band active seeker for the same - A missile with an active seeker uses command guidance for the initial phase of interception and then switches to a miniaturized radar fitted in its nose cone for terminal phase (end game) interception. (The current Akash missile uses command guidance for the entire interception phase which limits its effective range.) An active seeker makes a missile more accurate and less susceptible to countermeasures. It also gives the missile system some fire and forget capability, freeing it to engage other threats following terminal lock-on by the last launched missile.

Another big difference between Akash and Akash Mk-2 would be the dropping of Akash-1's ramjet sustainer in favor of pulsed rocket motor. A pulsed rocket motor has multiple propellant segments, with a barrier that stops ignition separating any two segments. When one segment burns out the missile coasts till another segment is ignited. During end game, a freshly ignited rocket motor segment would make Akash Mk-2 much more lethal than the ramjet of Akash.

Dual Pulse Rocket Motor for Akash Mark II has been developed - is also being used in MRSAM.

BTW what radar did you guys couple with Aakash?

Two RADAR's are used in Akash Mark I SAM - Rajendra Radar which is the primary fire control sensor for an Akash battery and central acquisition radar (3D-CAR) ROHINI - acting as the central early warning system for an Akash squadron deployment.

And what about Barak 8?

BARAK-8 / MRSAM uses EL/M-2248 MF-STAR AESA Radar.

It can be and the post above yours suggests that they are doing it.

What i do not understand that what's the need for this Indo-French SAM. Makes no sense.

Yeah then good for India as Mica a2a already has SAM variant so should Astra .

And I guess this deal is to replace and procure Area defence sam for our instalation . This deal is mainly for technology . But since Us ready to provide seeker which was not possible when this deal came to light so india should be looking for Make in India and export to its friendly countries including french ?o_O
