NEW DELHI: Concerned over the prolonged delay of Indo-French joint venture to develop short-range surface-to-air missile (SRSAM) system, French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has written to his Indian counterpart Arun Jaitley, expressing his government’s readiness to share high-end missile technology with India.

The SRSAM defence missile project is part of “Make in India” programme of Prime Minster Narendra Modi. In an official communication, Drian said the project would help India achieve maximum autonomy in the area of strategic missile system in a few years and create numerous highly skilled jobs.

Titled Maitri, the project, a joint development and production between India’s DRDO and MBDA of France, was initiated in 2007 and after six years of negotiations, a memorandum of understanding to co-develop the SRSAM was signed during French President Francois Hollande’s India visit in February 2013. In fact, in a joint statement it was then said that “steps are being taken for early finalisation of Maitri project”.

The Indian Navy and the Air Force project a requirement of at least 100 Maitri systems each. The Rs 30,000-crore project was aimed to fill the capability gap of air defence with the IAF and Navy.

“As a matter of fact, the project foresees that three years after signing of the contract, Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) will have an independent production capacity in Hyderabad and it will be able to deliver the first missile a year later,” Drian said in his letter to Jaitley.

Under the SRSAM programme, France would carry out a substantial transfer of technology to BDL, which will be the prime contract for production.

France has made it clear that technology sharing would take place exclusively in India and it would meet domestic requirements as well as future export market. Recently, the IAF had made some reservations over the project and recommended to replace it with domestic Akash missile. However, the South Block, which houses Ministry of Defence (MoD), has not taken a view on the IAF’s remarks.

“When the project involves two countries, we need to look at various aspects, especially when we have already signed an MoU. The IAF has made some reservations about the project, but the ministry has not taken any decision on it,” said a senior MoD official.

Contradicting the IAF claims, another MoD official said, “As far as I understand, there is no match between two missile systems. While the range of SRSAM will be of 40 km, Akash’s range is only 25 km. Moreover, the SRSAM will be much cheaper than Akash, if produced in India.”

Nopes,Maitri and Akash are completely different,Maitri is Short Range Quick Reaction SAM,where we will use what we have done in the Trishul project, with the help of the French.

IAF already said no to it and Akash can do the job!!! As for navy I think Barack 8 can do the job or may be something like@hariprasad said!!

.
iAF is happy with Aakash drops Maitri
IA is in user trials for Aakash but has ordered Aakash and most likely drop Maitri not in mood to increase the development costs and time
IN alone will not fund maitri seems like - will go for barak 1 for short range

our own QR/SR-SAM a new effort is on

i think maitri is history

it is not the same or connect with akash coze Maitri is SRQR SAM.
IAF denie not because of Akash but they already buy Israel Spider SAM

India has developed a technology of miniature high performance rocket motor (used in MRSAM) . We can use miniature version of motor and electronics of MRSAM to build this SRSAM.

.
I propose Miniature version of Astra for SRSAM role weighing less than 100 K G and having a range of 15 to 20 KM.

If we could develop an own version, we wouldn't have cancelled the Trishul SAM program, but we couldn't and that resulted in IAF buying Israeli SPYDER SAM's and not Akash SAMs for the QR-SAMs requirement. Just as IA and IN evaluated options for another missile and ended up with Maitri. So going back now again, makes no sense.

If I remember correctly then a air to air missile can not be converted in ground to air SAM easily. It was written in some good source, I am just not able to remember it correctly. And Akash has its own limitations, so MAItRI is good at least on paper. And forgive me but I don't have even a little hope in our airforce when it comes to follow their own commitment. There are more than one examples involving both domestic as well as foreign companies dealing with it. Thank you.

if you follow news then ....

astra haas already been successfully tested from ground launch against airel targets .........

maybe part of testing regime but modified ......... can work

france is being latkawing for many things one of them is not honouring commitments on ToT for scorpenes and arm twisting - jacking up prices for rafale after winning the L1 bid

. . .
maybe i am not a technical person but

it is being planned with modifications

Infact Astra was tested ground to Air mode prior to testing in A to A mode. It had successfully destroyed the target.

i think its dead

Akash is a potent but old system becoming obsolete slowly. We need a light weight high speed seeker based missile to replace AKASH. Any missile in the line of MRSAM LRSAM shall do.

I hope that you know that we started that highly ambitious program 3 decade ago. We have moved a lot since then. We have successfully tested Astra in ground to Air mode. We are partner in sophisticated missile like MR AND LRSAM. Looking all the subsequent development, SRSAM seems very much within our technological reach. We are open to incorporate some foreign system to expedite the program.
