PARIS -- France's finance minister says European countries should push back harder against the Trump administration over the Iran nuclear deal and not act as "vassals" to the U.S.

The back and forth Friday came as thousands of Iranians took to the streets in cities across the country to protest President Trump's decision.

European governments are scrambling for ways to save billions of dollars in trade that could collapse because of Mr. Trump's decision this week to re-impose sanctions. He argued that the 2015 nuclear deal, which allowed for the lifting of sanctions, wasn't tough enough on Iran.

French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said on Europe-1 radio that Europe should not accept that the U.S. is the "world's economic policeman."

"Do we want to be vassals who obey decisions taken by the United States while clinging to the hem of their trousers?" Le Maire asked. "Or do we want to say we have our economic interests, we consider we will continue to do trade with Iran?"

Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, meanwhile, condemned the U.S. move to re-impose sanctions on foreign companies trading with Iran as unacceptable. In a newspaper interview Le Drain said Europeans would "do everything to protect the interests of their companies" and planned to lead "tight negotiations" with Washington.

Out of the P5+1, everyone says they will stay in the deal apart from the USA.

Specifically, China + Russia + Britain + France + Germany say they will stay with the deal.

. . .
EU say they are the same level as the US. EU never use American weapons? F-22? Ha we got Typhoon and Rafale and Gripen NG. M1A2? Ha we got Leopard 2A7 and Leclerc and Ariete. Virginia? Ha we got Barracuda. Apache? Ha we got Tiger. Arleigh Burke? Ha we got FREMM and Sachsen.

I would be surprised. United States plays a critical role in Europe and has done so since 1945. US acts as the Caesar over Europe sans Russia. America provides the steel lattice around which most of the western architecture is built. In particular the defence backbone in Europe against the percieved threat to western Europe and real threat to eastern Europe from Russia. Crap hits the fan in Europe it is the US that walks in to sort out the mess amongst the quarreling Europeans. Under US gaze western Europe has enjoyed the longest stretch in peace. The best example of this tempering and father like hand of US on Europe is the Bosnian Muslim genocide and the wider war in former Yugoslavia. Europe just sat there helplessly talking, talking while another genocide took place in heart of Europe in mid 1990s. It was the final decisive intervention by US that settled athe war and brought peace to Balkans. Right now US Army is present in Balkans and Baltics, in the former keeping peace, in the latter keep the Russians in place.

Talk as much as they might Europe will go only so far and will not annoy Uncle Sam too much. It depends too much on NATO and US for that. The upshot of this is if Trump pushes hard all the Euros bi^tching and moaning will fall in line.

Says who the Balkans are the heart of Europe?

Trump is a disaster for the US and good for countries like Russia and China.

Yep. That narcissistic immature man child thinks he's the new Fuhrer.

You know that NATO actually covertly stoked up ethnic and religious tensions in Yugoslavia to "help" Balkanize it. And then they acted as heroes....

Just imagine that Pakistan is balkanised (God forbid) and there is a civil war. Guess what? the US comes in and saves the day, secures the nukes and sorts out a peace agreement and prevents the shed of further blood. Meanwhile keeping bases there permanently. People will see them as peacekeepers. But people will fail to realise that the US before all of this has been covertly supporting destabilisation in Pakistan in order to go in and and "save the day"....

You ignore that most western platforms are linked. Any weapon system will use a whole bunch of suppliers from across the differant NATO countries. Leo, Leclerc, Challanger, Ariete I believe all share the same German 120mm Rhienmetall gun. Ditto for choppers, planes, subs etc etc. There is a basket of suppliers and each country purchases from them to build their 'local' iteration. The analogy of VW might not be exact but I think still it helps. VW platforms are sold as Seat in Spain, Skoda in Czechia, with even Audi sharing some technology. Of course the US leads in the spectrum and depth.

You need to talk to Bosniaks or Kosovars - there is some in UK to see what you say holds any currency with them.

I don't have the energy to even discuss the bullshit that is this statement.

(relevant to this context at least)

Europe is at their breaking point when it comes to Trumpland. :enjoy:

All of them have said they will continue to stay in the JCPOA. We'll see if it sticks this time.
Khameiny himself said he does not trust them in his last speech.. and urged the government not to trust them either..unless they come up with very sound and concrete guarantees that they will continue trade with Iran including Oil..While they have all agreed they want to keep the nuclear deal but negotiate to add new clauses to it.. So the difference with Trump is very subtle.. and might be worst for Iran who will have to abide by the deal while being sanctioned harshly again.. Something it did not want even before the deal..which essence was to lift the sanctions in the first place.. Food for thoughts..
