What's new

France Deploys two Frigates as it Joins Operation IRINI to enforce Libya arms embargo

Is there any source for that ? I wasn't able to find any.
I learned it from ex-Admiral Cem Gürdeniz.

He says, ships can be boarded for inspection but;
1-) Boarding side should get permission from the ship's flag country.
2-) Boarding side should get permission from the ship's captain.

He says even in Operation Endeavor which happened after 9/11 for combating terrorism finances in Mediterranean it happened like that.

And i'm saying plus to these rules, we are maintaning 4 Frigates and Replenishment Ship at the coast of Libya, They are there for 3 months at times of Corona.

While..... Coronavirus: 668 infected on French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle

So Turkey is openly violating an UN embargo and even comitting its armed forces to violate it ? Interesting. And yes many other countries do too. Many countries act without impunity because there's always nobody to enforce UN rules. There's a reason why the GNA is worried.
France, Russia, UAE are violating UN embargo...maybe Turkey does it too, who knows.......

Anyways,I guess encounters between European and Turkish ships will get funny.
EU can't protect a member state's "EEZ" (fake EEZ ofcourse), yet alone they will challange Turkish Navy..... i don't think so. No offence but European's are good for making a lot of noise when it comes to action they are no where to be found.[/QUOTE]

Maybe he's right. If that's true, you can still force the ship to change its course in case it refuses to get searched.

The Charles de Gaulle has been disinfected and all of its crew has recovered. It will remain at dock til autumn but can go back to sea immediatly in case of emergency.

It's true all those Turkish made drones, weapons and armored vehicles ended up God only knows how in Libya...

Yes you are right about this fact. Let's see how things go.

I don't agree with the mission obviously and think it's unfair etc etc, but that is one mean looking ship. She's beautiful.

Indeed that's a beautiful ship. And despite its age (commissionned in 1991) remains quite a potent ship. Its surveillance and detection systems have been modernized in the recent years, notably in 2012 when it was equipped with a new SMART-S radar. It's equipped with 40 SM-1 MR missiles fired by a Mark 13 launcher.

And remains quite well defended with two Sadral short surface to air missile systems, four decoy launchers,a 100mm naval gun,two torpedo tubes,8 exocet missiles and of course several machine guns and two 20mm canons and some electronic warfare equipments.

Its sister ship the Cassard was decommissioned last year, the Jean Bart will follow in 2021. The two frigates will be replaced in 2021 and 2022 by two Fremm frigates with enhanced air defence capabilities, the Alsace and Lorraine.

Why didnt you remove old radar as you upgraded with Smart-S which had more range?
I looked at the radar in Wikipedia. İt has just 130km range. The reason it remains could be that SM1 can work with jupiter radar.

You know the Cassard and Jean Bart should have been decommissioned by 2012 already, they were kept much more longer because there was no ship actually to replace them. 2 more Horizon class frigates had to be ordered to replace them but it was deemed too costly.

In fact due to the cost of the Fremm program and the reduction of planned units (From 17 to 11 and finally to 8),those 2 frigates with enhenced air defence capabilities will be as costly as the 2 more Horizon frigates we planned to order.

Also another interesting thing is Why dont you add some Aster missiles as there is smart-s ?

Good question.

It was considered to replace the ageing SM-1R with Aster missiles, however it would have required an expensive overhaul. The integration of VLS in place of the MK13 launcher and the missile hold also deemed to pose weight problems on an already weakened hull,so the option was abandoned.
