Four of the accused at the gang-rape trial involving the son of a Chinese general have pleaded guilty, state media reports.

The father of Li Tianyi, 17, holds a rank equivalent to a general as dean of the music department for the Chinese army's Academy of Arts while his mother is a prominent singer.

The case is the latest allegation against the privileged children of officials to provoke anger.
Four of the five accused pleaded guilty at the Haidian district court, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Friday after the two-day trial ended on Thursday.

It did not make clear how Li had pleaded. But during the hearings the Beijing News reported that he "did not admit to the sexual assault and did not admit to a relationship, saying he was drunk and did not know anything" about what happened.

The trial was closed to the public due to the ages of the accused. Li's family has previously argued the incident was a case of prostitution rather than rape, according to reports. Xinhua quoted the victim's lawyer as saying that she had been hospitalised because of stress and would not take part in the hearings.

Elite youths in China are commonly perceived to live extravagantly or above the law due to their connections, and the case dominated discussion in the country's hugely popular internet chatrooms. Following reported remarks by Li's family that the alleged victim may have been a bar hostess, a top legal expert inflamed controversy when he said the woman's profession made the act of gang-rape less harmful.

"Even if it was rape, the harm of raping a bar hostess is less than raping a woman from a good family," Yi Yanyou, a law professor at the prestigious Tsinghua University in Beijing, said on Sina Weibo. Li Tianyi previously triggered controversy in 2011 after he and another teenager, both driving expensive cars, attacked a couple who reportedly blocked their passage, while the victims' child looked on.

In another scandal involving the offspring of China's wealthy elite, the son of a police chief in 2010 tried to use his father's status to avoid any consequences for a fatal car accident. After running over a student in the northern province of Hebei, Li Qiming - who is not related - shouted: "Sue me if you dare. My father is Li Gang!"

He was later sentenced to six years in prison.

@Fattyacids, your thoughts on these "Communist" princelings?

Glad to see common Chinese (not internet army) putting pressure on the state to crack down on their rulers and families. This is how change takes place, not through paid trolling.

I see some Chinese internet army guys will try to make off topic comments, but lets not fall for that daily trick.

May I ask the update on Asaram's Rape? He's been evading the law for almost two weeks straight.

I have been following this case. I believe the woman is abusing the public's mistrust and anger against the wealthy and is extorting for both publicity and wealth. Plus, Li is a teenager while the woman is adult. The woman would be guilty herself if she indeed tried to seduce Li.

The woman waited 2 days to report to the police that she was raped? The Chinese public is being very irrational and would side with anyone that claims to be victim. I really hope the court will not be swayed by public opinion and try the case based on evidence, nothing but verifiable evidence.

In fact to your disappointment, it's not common Chinese, but Internet crusaders, that are interfering in this case. IMHO, the Chinese public is no different than the one that trusted communist revolution and overthrew nationalist government in 30s and 40s. They still play victim card and have no idea what rule of law means.

@Okemos

Shame on you.

Women don't find it easy to report rape. Reporting is another mental trauma. I am convinced you belong to the paid ccp brigade.

and I am convinced you are mindless troll? lol anyone here that have read my posts would known I am very critical of CCP government. Might I remind you, unlike Indian women, Chinese women are very independent and will report rape or whatever to the police. Sorry, we have different culture that has been transformed by communist revolution, which I have mixed feelings. It got rid of some nice old traditions, but also empowered women tremendously. Being raped is not really taboo that would make women unmarriable.

Also, just because someone reports to the police, doesn't mean a crime has been committed.

yes sure there is rape in china but not as often as one rape every 40mins :P
In India, one rape every 40 mins: Study - Indian Express

Beijing is not rape capital delhi is:P

Delhi, rape capital? 393 rape cases in first three months this year ...

Plus gang rape in public! gee, I mean wherever there is man, there will be some unwilling sex in every country, but India just crosses the line. News about India rape cases are always about gang rape in public! Wonder how many unreported rapes in private.

Privileged children of CPC officials are always above the law.
Recently JP Morgan is in deep trouble because it gave jobs to children of CPC officials in return for some favors. Children of CPC officials rarely join state enterprises. Corruption is major problem in China.

I know that you are trolling, but you have failed epically. See, justice is well served in China, despite being a princeling and a juvenile, this chap is sentenced to 6 years in prison. Unlike in India, the juvenile who raped and murdered only got 3 years in reform home.
