The International Olympic Committee disqualified Russian bobsledder Alexander Zubkov, who won two gold medals in Sochi, for violating anti-doping rules.
Zubkov was one of four Russian athletes whose sanctions were announced on Friday. Speed skater Olga Fatkulina, who won silver in the 500 meters, was also among those disqualified.
Zubkov’s disqualification could lead to medal upgrades for the United States in both events. Steven Holcomb, who died unexpectedly on May 6, piloted both sleds to bronze medals. Brakeman Steve Langton pushed both sleds, while Curtis Tomasevicz and Christopher Fogt were part of the four-man team.
The IOC could re-award the medals following potential appeals to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Bobsledder Olga Stulneva and speed skater Alexander Rumyantsev, neither of whom medaled, were also disqualified on Friday.
