LAHORE: Former Qatari premier Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al-Thani reached Lahore on Wednesday to meet Pakistan Muslim League-N leader Nawaz Sharif.
The former Qatari prime minister arrived in Pakistan with a 13-member delegation in a special plane. The Qatari dignitaries were taken to Nawaz's residence with full government protocol.
His meeting with the former prime minister is presently under way at the latter’s residence in Jati Umra. an image Qatari Prince Hamad Bin Jasim's convoy arriving at Jati Umra.
Sources have informed that Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who is currently in Islamabad, will join the meeting if he arrives in Lahore on time.
The purpose of the meeting between the PML-N leader and Qatari leader is not known yet. However, the Arab royal family member is said to be a close ally of Nawaz and attempted to aid the former premier's case during the Panama Papers proceedings in the Supreme Court earlier this year.
Hamad bin Jassim's letter, shown to the Supreme Court, claimed that the London properties of Sharif family were proceeds of their real estate businesses in which the prime minister’s father, Mian Muhammad Sharif, had invested 12 million dirhams in 1980.
Earlier, a letter from Hamad Bin Jassim was brought to light late in Geo News’ program Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath – on July 20, 2017. In the letter obtained by Geo News, the Qatari royal family member promised a meeting in Doha with the Panama Papers’ Joint Investigation Team (JIT) on the condition of being provided immunity from any court-related matters and resulting investigation in Pakistan.
The prince also vowed to verify in the meeting the authenticity of two prior letters sent to Pakistan with regard to the Panama Papers case.
The letters in question were slammed as bogus by certain political leaders, who alleged that it only surfaced to help the then-prime minister escape money laundering charges.
