Kalam's mortal remains to be laid to rest in Rameswaram on Thursday - The Hindu
Updated: July 28, 2015 15:10 IST

The mortal remains of former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, would be laid to rest on Thursday morning in Rameswaram, district Collector K. Nanthakumar said.

In a brief interaction with reporters here on Tuesday, he said the body would be brought here from Delhi on Wednesday afternoon and the funeral would take place around 10: 30 am on Thursday.

After the arrival in the afternoon, the body would be taken to “House of Kalam”, the ancestral house of the former President . Later, the body would be kept in the open ground in front of the bus stand for the public to pay homage, the Collector said.

The district administration has selected three places for the funeral and would finalise a place after consulting A. P. J. M. Maraikayar, elder brother of Mr. Kalam and other family members, official sources said.

Three places – a government land at Meyyampuli, near Thangachimadam; a forest land at Natarajapuram near Danushkodi; and a private land of Abil Kabil Dargah have been shortlisted, the sources said.

SHILLONG: Moments before he collapsed at an event in Meghalaya, former President APJ Abdul Kalam greeted a policeman who stood for hours as part of his security detail and said: "Thank you, buddy."

Dr Kalam's aide Srijan Pal Singh has shared in a Facebook post how the former president was concerned about the policeman just ahead of them in an open gypsy that was part of the convoy heading for the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong.

"One hour into the road journey, Dr Kalam said 'Why is he standing? He will get tired. This is like punishment. Can you ask a wireless message to given that he may sit?' I had to convince him, he has been probably instructed to keep standing for better security," Mr Singh writes.

The former president, for the rest of the journey that lasted an hour and a half, kept asking whether the policeman could be signaled to sit down.

On reaching the IIM building, where Dr Kalam was to deliver a lecture, his aide found the guard and took him to meet the former president.

"Dr. Kalam greeted him. He shook his hand, said thank you buddy. Are you tired? Would you like something to eat? I am sorry you had to stand so long because of me," Mr Singh posted.

Moments later, while delivering the lecture, Dr Kalam collapsed and died after a massive cardiac arrest.

His gesture was mentioned by a senior police officer who said that the former President congratulated a Special Operation Team or SOT personnel "for being alert throughout the road trip from Guwahati to Shillong last evening."

The officer, M Kharkrang, said the policeman first "got scared" when Dr Kalam summoned him.

Dr Kalam began delivering a lecture on 'Creating a liveable planet' when he collapsed and was rushed to the city's Bethany hospital. His funeral will be held in Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu, where he was born.

Such a great and humble man..your loss can't be replace....huge loss of india...Please GOD give us more Kalam..
What a beautiful human being.....

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was 'filled with sorrow' following Gurdaspur terror attack | Zee News

Shillong: Former President APJ Abdul Kalam was "filled with sorrow" following yesterday's terror attack in Punjab's Gurdaspur district hours before he collapsed while delivering a lecture at IIM here and died.

"Kalam was absolutely worried about the attacks in Punjab. The loss of innocent lives left him filled with sorrow," Srijan Pal Singh, a close aide, who was with him on his last day, said.

The 'people's president' was in the midst of a lecture on 'Creating a Livable Planet Earth' when he suffered a fatal heart attack.

Singh said Kalam related the Gurdaspur incident to the topic he was scheduled to lecture on saying,"It seems man made forces are as big a threat to the livability of earth as pollution."

As the discussion continued on what will happen if the present trend of violence, pollution and reckless human action continues, Kalam was quoted as saying, "Thirty years, at this rate, maybe? You guys must do something about it? it is going to be your future world."

Before beginning his speech at IIM, Kalam had called a constable, S A Lapang, to know if he was tired and even offered to get him something to eat.

"Are you tired? Would you like something to eat? I am sorry you had to stand so long because of me," he told the policeman, taking him by surprise.

The young man, clearly at a loss for words, replied, "Sir, can stand even for six hours for you."
