Former DUCSU vice-president Nur unveils new party with Reza Kibria as convenor


Nurul Haque Nur, former vice-president of Dhaka University Students’ Union, has launched a new political party with Reza Kibria, son of the late Awami League leader Shah AMS Kibria, as the convenor.
Nur is the member secretary of the new party, Bangladesh Gana Odhikar Parishad. The members of the 83-strong committee are former and current leaders of Nur’s organisations for students, youths and workers.

Reza revealed a plan to field a candidate for each of the 300 seats in the next parliamentary election, demanding a caretaker government during the polls.

He said the party would discuss the issue of an election-time caretaker government with other political organisations.

Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, the trustee of Gonoshasthaya Kendra, attended the event at the new party’s headquarters at Pritam Zaman Tower in Purana Paltan on Tuesday.

The party announced plans to focus on the prevention of corruption, the balance of power, good governance, the right to vote and other issues, said Md Rashed Khan, joint convenor of the new party.

Nur came to the limelight after his organisation Bangladesh Council to Protect General Students’ Rights spearheaded a campaign against quotas in government jobs in 2018. He was elected the VP of DUCSU in 2019.

Reza’s father, Shah AMS Kibria, served as the finance minister under Sheikh Hasina from 1996 to 2001. He was re-elected to the Habiganj-1 seat (Nabiganj-Bahubal) in 2001 and was killed in a grenade attack in Habiganj in 2005.

Reza had worked in the International Monetary Fund for a long time. He left the job and joined Dr Kamal Hossain’s Gono Forum in 2018. He resigned due to a dispute in the party after Dr Kamal had made him the general secretary.

After leaving the Fund he taught at Dhaka University and did consulting for the World Bank, United Nations and the Asian Development Bank.

He was Lead Advisor and Coordinating Author for the World Bank report on governance in Bangladesh, “Government That Works” (1996). He is also one of the authors (with I. Islam and M. Hossain) of “South Asian Economic Development: Transformation, Challenges and Opportunities”, (Routledge 1999). He served as Macroeconomic Advisor to the Treasury Department of Papua New Guinea (1996-2000), with responsibility for the macroeconomic framework and policy coordination. He was Principal Economist for PDP Australia (2000-2008), leading technical assistance teams and managing projects.

He was also Adjunct Professor at the Key Centre for Ethics, Law, Justice and Governance of Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. Dr. Kibria was Macro Fiscal Advisor, IMF East Africa Regional Technical Assistance Center in Dar es Salaam from 2009 to 2011, providing technical assistance to the Ministries of Finance and Central Banks of Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.

In recent years Reza has worked on projects in India (Kerala-Supporting Fiscal Reforms), China (Designing Technical Assistance Programs for the Ministry of Finance and the State Authority of Taxation), the U.A.E (Program Budgeting), Kuwait (Budget Reforms), Tanzania (National Employment Creation Program), Indonesia (Local Government Finances) and most recently, Bangladesh (IFMIS – Deepening MTBF –Strengthening Public Expenditure Management Program SPEMP, Ministry of Finance). I do not think anything will change unless this new party or another has a proper manifesto it declares for the development of the country. A manifesto is supposed to be declared at the very formation of a new party.

@bluesky , don't bother thinking on it. Bangladesh is.under control of deep state which is better for Bangladesh.

BAL is just front face of it. If you observe the current condition of Bangladesh, you will see that distance between BAL govt and BAL party is increasing.

After the retirement of Hasina , it's faraj/necessary to abolish BAL from Bangladesh, so the new political parties will be filling the void I believe.

They will get all non BAL votes , but yes they have to fight for votes ; under the supervision of deep state ( or whatever it is ) though !

But everyone must have to remain under control , otherwise will meet the consequences of Ershad and Khaleda Zia!

I'm excited by the formation of the party, as finally it launched. Now let's wait and observe.

Maybe 1986 drama is on it's way. History will repeat itself , but on slight different method.

Later maybe PTI method will be followed!

Yes agree. However can we take nur , Rashed , Tarek Rahman ( not tareq chora) , and some others as alternative to Bhasani , Sohrawardi and A.K fazlul Haq?

Consider Reza Kibria as a ceromonial head of this party.

I really liked the formula of Sonia ghandi of making Manmahon sing as PM.

Although in communal and fanatic India this method miserabely failed , but I wish in Bangladesh it will be successful.

Anyone who came up through student politics is same old. Nur guy just has a slappable face!

Reza is clearly the most educated, talented and qualified person in BD.

We Sylhetis know him extremely well. Mix in the same social circles - let’s say.

He is unsuitable for BD’s retail politics.

He can only become PM if put there by the military.

Then he becomes a lame duck like Imran Khan.

Any military backed government will be totally reliant on US.

Which means we cannot deal with China.

US will force BD to be even more subservient to India.

US doesn’t give a SHIT about BD as long as it is not close to China.

Our exports will stagnate like it did under Zia to Ershad.
