Egypt's state-run TV channel has been criticised for broadcasting a public service announcement which warns people that foreigners on the streets could be spies out to destroy the country.

Political activists complained that it fanned xenophobic feelings and added to suspicions that last year's revolution was incited by non-Egyptians.

Dina Demrdash reports from Cairo.

last time I checked there were plenty of grownups in Egypt who are intelligent enough to separate fact from fiction. So no one (specially the political activists) should be worried of such conspiracy theory... unless...:what:

There are plenty of people with low intelligence as well as any other society. Not everybody is a grownup there.

Sir I respect your rank and the time you must have spent here but my point is simple. I for one dont see anything wrong in telling ppl of any nation to be watchful of foreigners who are extra interested in your country’s political demography. Yes I agree that it might cause a small percentage of the population to act suspiciously to tourists but it dosent mean they would be hostile to them or anything. May be I am a bit naive or may be its just a storm in a cup.

No, it is wrong, especially if your main industry is tourism industry. I dont think any responsible govt will do that. It is govt and police job to gather such information, this sounds a bit like 1984.

Why western media have started to demonize Egypt? The revolution hasn't succeeded yet, so why they bother to demonize Egypt when Egypt is still under control? Are they really that afraid of a free Egypt?

You see a lot of nonsense articles coming from BBC, CNN and other western media that Egypt is going to the dogs and they want to encourage marriage with under age girls, etc... I mean why should such a cheap ad sparks controversy? Do you think Egyptians are that gullible and stupid to buy that crap? What BBC thinks about Egyptians to write a nonsense like this? I feel that they're trying to demonize Egypt step by step.

Maybe I'm overreacting, but the BBC too is also overreacting. If we want to judge 80 million people in Egypt by just the real action of very few young Egyptians, we'll never reach a correct judgement. No one, in any sane country, including Egypt, buys such crap except a bunch of people that like conspiracy theories and have extra time to think about impossibles.

BBC like any other news reporting agency is reporting that something happened there ( has Iranian govt ever advertised about foreign spies? ) and people's reaction to it. Some think it is true, and some dont.

I know. I didn't say BBC is lying. But the selection of news is something that could be criticized. You know, the media rarely demonize a country directly (Iran is an exception though, that they like to demonize it directly in any way they could) but instead they try to feed people with the selected information they want to give a planned image of the country. That's my opinion, but I don't insist on it.
