The minister urges for addressing difficulties being faced by Bangladeshi student visa applicants

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has said the United States may consider accepting a good number of forcibly-displaced Rohingyas in Bangladesh for filling up a large portion of the new numbers set for 2021 and 2022.

Momen appreciated US President Joe Biden's recent announcement to enhance the admission of refugees to the US to 62,500 in 2021 and 125,000 in 2022.

He also expressed optimism that the US, as the largest humanitarian donor for the humanitarian operations for the forcibly displaced Rohingyas camped in Bangladesh, will continue to provide necessary assistance for Rohingyas, including those now settled in Bhasan Char.

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl R Miller met the foreign minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday and discussed the issues.
The US ambassador informed that, during the upcoming launch of the annual Joint Response Plan (JRP) on May 18 in Geneva, the US is expected to pledge again for a large contribution to the humanitarian operation for Rohingyas.

Momen also assured the US side on Bangladesh's cooperation on the ongoing investigation into the genocide against Rohingyas in Myanmar, as reinitiated by the Biden administration.

The foreign minister urged the US ambassador to address the difficulties being faced by a large number of Bangladeshi student visa applicants to obtain visa interview date in the US Embassy in Dhaka, as many may lose admission and scholarship due to the delay.

The US ambassador informed that many interview slots had to be cancelled due to the lockdown.

He assured Momen of doing the best to make sure all the student visa applicants get interview slots on a priority basis once the lockdown is over so that they can join their academic sessions in US universities in time.

The main point of discussion was the process of acquiring AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine from the US to meet up the growing needs in Bangladesh to address the present shortfall.

Foreign Minister Momen underscored that while the immediate need of Bangladesh is around 4 million doses of vaccine, the US government may consider providing 20 million AstraZeneca vaccine to Bangladesh from its stock.

The US ambassador assured that his government is sincerely working on the proposal, though this is difficult to predict a timeframe at this moment.

He also informed that the United States is yet to provide any AstraZeneca vaccine to India, and hopefully Bangladesh will get the vaccine at the same time India gets.

The foreign minister emphasized an early decision.

He also welcomed US President Joe Biden's declaration to support Intellectual Property Waiver for vaccines in the WTO, and expressed optimism that this would enable developing countries, including Bangladesh, to produce US vaccines in the near future.

Momen and the US ambassador also discussed the ways and means of bolstering bilateral cooperation, especially the area of climate change adaptation and mitigation, including possible mutual engagement before and during the COP26 of the UNFCCC scheduled in November 2021 in Glasgow, as well as through mutual support in different elections in the UN system including in the UN Human Rights Council.

That’s no joke if true. Damn
i doubt it's going to go through. Canada offered to do the same but the BD gov declined for reasons we don't know.
What do the yanks want in return ? naval base ? airbase ? logistics supply ? that is another question.
if negotiations with Burma stall or collapse , BD should look to move towards some kind of agreement with US or canada and get benefits (military and economic) .

Get sympathy of Western allies and reap the economic rewards. Advocate for minority rights in Burma
Our diplomats should have lobbied strongly with the western countries to impose economic sanctions on Burma back in 2017-19 not just because of Rohingya but Karen , kachin etc.

The ministers wont let it happen

As long as Rohingya are in BD , the ministers can have nice fat commission.

Probably had constipation when Canada offered. Anyway US didn't offer anything. Bangladesh actually urged US ambassador to take Rohingyas after Biden's announcement. The "may/might" in the article actually means different thing.

Someone is smoking something real strong. US might take a token to beat its human rights chest. They would never take a meaningful number, nor should they. Where is the world - all European capitals, who wined and dined the Su Yi from Burma (nobel peace price winner), who was a cheerleader for some of these pogroms.

i'll be honest and say i did not really read the article , just the head line.
if burmese don't take them back and give them their rights , we will have to integrate them to our society which is the easy way out of this mess (some ppl will not like this decision) . The thing is , I dont want our backyard to become like Afghanistan.
We can generate sympathy for us in the West and get economic benefits and lobby to sanction Burma.

should have accepted the canadian offer as the women and children would have had a better life.

I am one of them. I got better idea. Use the Nazi solution or euthanize them (reproduction capability). Stop rescuing Rohigyas who gets stranded at sea while fleeing the country for Malaysia. Use them as workers in our project under strict monitoring to minimize the cost. If they don't want to fight like Karen, Kachin and Arakan they treat them like this way. Beggars can't be choosers. Sitting idly, screwing wife and making kids like rats, smuggling drugs or robbing shouldn't be tolerated.

Yeah, i knew that. Too lazy to write.

I think economic sanctions are already imposed on them.

Disagree, we are not savages like our eastern neighbours.
Don't think our gov could deal with the ramifications of arming and training insurgents .Look at Pakistan and Afghanistan, all the development of BD will go to waste.
this is not enough. before the coup, they got 140 million USD/ year just from the USA as development aid they also had GSP etc . They sanctioned some specific entities like travel restrictions on generals and their companies . It does not hit them hard enough.
They had defence co-operation with Australia and some close neighbour(s) in south asia (ill get banned if i explain further) .

Integrating the Rohingya will be tough, as humanitarian that move would be. These folks are largely uneducated, poor and into farming.

We are already having enough issues feeding our indigenous Bengali populace and providing them jobs. More mouths to feed is not a great idea.

Besides if done, it will teach the Bamars and Tatmadaw that ethnic cleansing and racial pogroms have a happy ending - on their side. They can get away with horrible crimes like this with impunity.

What is amazing is that the Western countries who are such champions of global human rights and racial equality - did not lift a finger to help these people, or provide a recourse for this great crime. They are continuing to do business with Myanmar like nothing happened.

Tells you how hypocritical some Western nations are.

Well, Biden just increased the number of refugees allowed back to 62,000 or so. Of course, only a small fraction will be let in and the process to vet candidates will be long and tedious.

Still, it's interesting Bangladesh is doing all it can to get rid of the Rohingyas. What is the OIC doing since they are, after all, fellow Muslims? At least help Bangladesh defray the cost of housing and feeding the refugees?

And didn't the FM of Bangladesh visit the US and asked a US Congresswoman to help legalize illegal Bangladeshis? Shouldn't Bangladesh offer the same to these Rohingyas?
