This is very interesting, and most welcomed development in human society. This is perhaps the first time that the overwhelming majority of Digg posters actually used reasonable logic, rather than mindless bashing. I applaud them for being more open minded.
Now why is this interesting and important???
Because in today's world we are in contact with people from various places, with different cultures, values and beliefs. So often nowadays (and in the past as well) people try to FORCE their BELIEFS onto others. We all know that doesn't work out so well.
So the first forbidden & taboo subject is "Eating cats & dogs". The argument that cats and dogs are cute and furry so we don't eat them is debunked when we eat seals, lambs, deer, etc. The argument that they are intelligent goes against the practice of eating pigs which have been shown to be MORE intelligent and aware than both cats and dogs. The argument that these animals are 'endangered' is also invalid. Finally the argument that they are "sacred" as pets is ironic in that not all societies consider the same animals the same way (e.g. Hindus == cows, Islam == pigs, etc).
Recently, if you paid attention there has been a lot of pressure from "animal rights groups". Examples include the Dolphins, Whales, etc.
It may be a surprise for most readers to discover is that Chinese in China actually consume very little meat!!! The per capita meat consumption in China is MUCH LOWER than in America, Oz, Canada, Europe. Chinese do consume slightly more meat per capita than India. Of late, these Animal Rights advocates have pressured China to ban the consumption of cat and dog meat with very heavy fines.
Here's what is ironic. I know people who work in pet pounds/shelters, aka "humane societies". What I was surprised to discover was the SHEER MAGNITUDE OF CATS, DOGS, etc THAT ARE CULLED (i.e. killed) EVERY WEEK!!! We call these "stray animals", and there's a LOT more than you think!!! And there's a REASON you don't see as many as you should, and that's because when they are caught or brought to the pound, after so-and-so days no one picks them up, they are "culled".
In places where people are NOT wasteful, people eat them instead of just killing them and dumping &/or burning the carcasses.
Now to be honest, most diets in the world (Asia, Arabs, Natives) have become more similar to Occidental cultures, and these meats are more of a rare delicacies.
I understand how people can have such strong emotions, especially when they see live animals killed in person or in videos. The truth is most 'Westerners' are the majority meat consumers, but because "What-I-don't-see-can't-haunt-me" reality of life, they don't realize that to get this meat in their grocery store all cut and pack neatly, somewhere along the line, the damn animal was brutally - yes brutally - slaughtered by some human being. Basically most of us let someone else do the "dirty work" of slaughtering. It is strange, or rather hypocritical to condemn others for eating meat when we Westerners eat even MORE meat.
Now let's get back on this latest news. Contrary to false beliefs, MOST (i.e. nearly all) Chinese do NOT eat cats, dogs or other exotic animals. And even if they did, what is "wrong" with that??? Why is it "okay" to eat one type of animal but not another??? When you think about it, eat a MORE DIVERSE DIET IS ACTUALLY MORE ECOLOGICAL HEALTHY & SUSTAINABLE. Some people may argue that going 100% vegetarian is ideal, but they neglect the FACT that FOOD WEB IS PART OF NATURE (i.e. organisms consuming other organisms is 100% natural).
And so I was pleasantly surprised at the following comments. I think I can take some credit for this more open-minded and fair thinking. Perhaps many Digg readers also read my constant harping against hypocracy. In another forum, a few years ago I wrote some scathing criticism of some people who solely target the Japanese for "whaling" while ignoring the Dutch or Norwegians who do the same. I mention the lack of logic, emotionalism and hypocracy of their actions. And after their eco-terrorism dramatically died down. I also saw on other forums people posted and discussed what I wrote. So I guess we all can make the world a better place.

China to Ban Eating Cats and Dogs
planetsave.com — It’s the nation’s first law against such animal abuse. But if the law is passed, people who eat either animal could face fines of up to $730 or 15 days in jail. Organizations involved the practices could face fines up to 100-times as much.

They're animals like any other. Why is it considered so disgusting to eat dogs and cats but pigs and cows are fair game? I just don't understand people sometimes.

Seriously, why?
What makes eating one type of animal any worse than eating another one? Personally, I've never try cat (that I know of), and apart from one very suspect 'lamb' (the skull of which seemed to have canines), I don't think I've tried dog either. Bu I certainly would if I was offered some.

FFS, this is just silly. I live in South Korea, and the older generation here loves to eat dog soup. I doubt it's different in China.
If they love it, let them ***** be. Most Hindu's don't eat cows because they think they are sacred. That's great for them, but I love steak. Most Westerners don't eat dogs or cats because we perceive them as pets. I have 2 dogs, and I don't eat dog meat. I do, however, understand that this is my choice and try to respect others opinions.
Imagine an old Chinese couple in a village who enjoy eating dog soup together every Friday evening. They've done this for 80 years, and their parents and grandparents did it as well (which is a huge ***** deal in Asia). This Friday, however, enjoying their meal will land them a huge *** fine and some time behind bars. WTF?

As much as it seems horrific to us to eat a dog or cat, this really seems like a cultural issue that I'm not sure should be overridden by law. Lambs and goats and rabbits are all cuddly little things too, but we eat them all the time.
I think some of these laws may only be passed for outsiders to think "oh well they cleaned up that, they must be a modern society now" with no intent of actually enforcing anything.

It's against the law in S. Korea, but they still do it. My little brother lived next to a dog slaughterhouse when he was there teaching English. Apparently, he heard barking for months, then he didn't.

I'm probably gonna get dugg down for this but I've tasted dog meat/soup and it's delicious. For those who are curious, the meat is incredibly tender and melts in your mouth. However, as a Westerner, the thought of eating dog kinda puts you off or at least it did for me.

This might be one of the most passively ignorant statements I've ever read. The dogs aren't always pets, either. (Yes, I know some are, I RTFA) Now, don't get me wrong, I work in a kennel, love, and wouldn't eat dogs. But that doesn't mean that they hold the same status for everyone. Eating dog has a long history in both Asia and mesoamerica. They are a low maintenance, easily trainable animal that will follow you wherever you go. It's practical.

"What service does a pig provide? A cat is a mouser and a dog can help hunt. There are reasons why these animals are pets and pigs/cows are considered food. It's not arbitrary at all. China knows that their culture has its weirdnesses and is doing the right thing here."
It pains me to do this, but by your own logic: In the year 2010, what possible reason could we have to use cats to catch mice and a dog to help hunt when we have 10 cent mouse traps and agriculture?
I accept that it may not be arbitrary given the history of a society, but when it comes to practical application in the modern era, there is simply no reasonable justification for putting dogs and cats above farm animals.

@m3arvk's lower tier comment:
No, China doesn't recognize this. China recognizes that it looks bad to Western investors that they are eating taboo animals in western society. Neither cats nor dogs are as smart as pigs, and all were domesticated at least in part for companionship. Why do we eat pigs? Because our culture tells us its alright to do. It's an arbitrary rule. It makes no real sense for any reason, and is debatably less humane than eating either a dog or cat because, again debatably, pigs are more aware of their situation. China has no such reservations against eating dog, so why, then, should they have to bend to our standards?

when I was in Korea for a meeting I really tried to find a place that served dog. I just wanted to try it, you know, just one of those 'I had to try it so I can say I did it' things in life. But my Korean hosts kept telling me "no-no, we don't eat dogs, that was 50 yrs ago", or "only people way out in the country eat dog"; but I knew they just didn't want me to know the truth. I'll be going to Vietnam next month and my Vietnamese friends have already told me they would set me up with all the dog I could eat (yikes). Vietnamese are so open and proud of their culture and hospitality, and that's how it should be.

I totally agree. If they like it dog or cat, let them it eat. I feel with China's recent tech, economic, everything explosion there's lots of pressure to leave traditional Chinese culture behind and start following occidental norms... I believe this new law was greatly created out of peer pressure.
I have had many pet dogs and cats, and I've still eaten dog when I go to China.

I thought this too at first, but i see it could also be to help stop people who are stealing animals that dont belong to them, in order to do this, not really sure how much of a % that would be, if its low/negligable then I too see no problem with anyone eating dogs/cats.

"The argument is about the reason why certain animals are viewed as pets and others as food."
No, no. We pretty much agree as to *why* animals are viewed as pets or as food. The discussion has really, up to this point at least, been about whether or not we are justified in extending our view of these animals to other countries that do not share our views. I think I've pretty concretely shown that we have no rational, current basis or moral high ground in asserting that dogs should not be eaten.
Cows have clearly not been food for all parts of the world. India.
Dogs have clearly not been pets for all parts of the world. Asia. America.
I imagine not many people eat cats because they don't have any meat on them. So they're not really worth discussing.
An anyway, much as people still use dogs and cats for things that aren't strictly necessary, so too do people eat dogs, even if it isn't strictly necessary. You see, again, the logic goes both ways.
Anyway, I'd ask that you don't twist my words. Good night.
In case you are wondering eating cats and dogs is NOT part of my diet. I am also a Conservationist-Enviromentalist in the true sense, rather than being an environmental extremist.
