For first time, Pakistan admits LeT, Jaish are based on its soil

Highlights
  • Asif said Pakistan needs to get rid of its past follies
  • Friends like China should not be tested every time, he said in regards to the recent BRICS declaration
  • A day earlier, Pakistan foreign office, however, had rejected the BRICS declaration
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Wednesday admitted for the first time that internationally proscribed terrorist outfits, such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Muhammed, were operating from within its territory, with foreign minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif calling for tougher action against these groups.

"We should impose restrictions on activities of elements like LeT and JeM so that we can show the global community that we've put our house in order," Asif told Geo News while responding to a BRICS declaration that named several terrorist groups, including the two, as threats to regional security.

Asif said Pakistan could no longer afford to "test" its friends on the issue of terrorism.

"Friends like China should not be tested every time, particularly in the changed (global) scenario," the minister added.
Only a day earlier, the foreign office in Islamabad, as well as defence minister Khurram Dastagir, had rejected the BRICS declaration, saying there were no safe havens for terrorists inside Pakistan.

In fact, the foreign office had said Pakistan was itself a victim of terror. But foreign minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said, "I am not making any political statement.. we cannot afford to shut our eyes on activities of these organisations in our country. If we continue to do that we will always face such embarrassments."

Asif admitted that Pakistan had made mistakes in the past, saying there was no need for the country to participate in the proxy war in Afghanistan during Ziaul Haq's tenure, and later in the war on terror. "There's an urgent need for a clean break from our past. In 1979, Pakistan had made a wrong decision and acted like a proxy for the next decade. After 9/11, we again made a wrong decision and adopted a war, which was never ours. We have suffered uncountable losses of lives and properties in this war," he said.

Asif said Pakistan needed to get rid of its false image. "We've no stakes involved but are only carrying the baggage of our past follies. We cannot correct ourselves as long as we do not accept historical facts," he said.

Don't want to get into good or bad terrorist debate, but acceptance of an issue is first step towards its resolution. Sooner or later every country realizes that these extremists can never do any society any good in long run irrespective of what their present value is for foreign policy.

So now what happens to all those discussions that have already taken place, where we trouble-making and trouble-seeking Indians were told
  1. Anti-Indian terrorist groups like LeT and JeM did not exist;
  2. If they existed, they did not exist in Pakistan;
  3. If they existed in Pakistan, they had no visibility, nobody knew where they were or what they did;
  4. If they existed and people knew about them, there was no active support from anybody for them, they were isolated individuals;
  5. If they got any assistance, it was purely private and individual support for a just cause;
  6. If they got any assistance apart from private and individual sources, it was merely moral and political support;
  7. If they got any military assistance, it might have been from elements in the country that had strong moral views on the subject and were acting without orders;
  8. .....and so on
This is nothing new. In 1947, we were told - the world was told
  1. Pakistan had nothing to do with the trouble in Kashmir;
  2. Pakistan had nothing but moral support for the revolt in Azad Kashmir;
  3. Pakistan had nothing to do with the raiders, and had no hand in recruiting, organising, arming and directing them;
  4. Pakistan had almost nothing to do with the raiders and only gave them some war-surplus weaponry;
  5. Pakistan had nothing to do with the raiders in terms of organisation and leadership, but some individuals might have got involved due to their personal belief;
  6. Pakistan had nothing to do with the raiders, but military officers on leave might have volunteered to serve with them;
  7. Pakistan had given them military support through regular units of the military as a pre-emptive strike against the possible reactions of victims of their massacres and looting.
Ob la di, ob la da, ob la di, O.... and the rest of it. Here we go again.

Ob la di

Ob la da

Ob la den?

Cheers, Doc

The US said the exact same thing a week ago and Pakistan promptly denied that..but the moment china via brics says it then pakistan's conscience is suddenly awake.

The fear of isolation makes the most hardened miscreants break down.

And there are well meaning friends from across the border who would have us believe that we're actually worse off than them ....

@I.R.A

Cheers, Doc

I'd say the same, if I were in their shoes. What to do? Can't drop one's pants in front of the whole, wide world.

Reminds me of music class at school. Good times.

If your music class was like this, it must have been awesome. Enjoy.

Trouble for them is that we are not the whole wide world.

We are them. And we know exactly what's under the pants.

Minus some significant bits of course ....

Cheers, Doc

Do you deny AJK people didn't revolt? Munna what lies Indians tell in their books? You also believe IoKashmiris would sing bandematram and bow down to ganj mata if not for Pakistan? Surely you are not that naive?

Trouble for few weeks meant permanent peace in AJK and G-B, well worth it.

You didn't get it. Pakistan denied everything at first, and admitted everything, one thing at a time, later. It is not about whether or not X, or Y, or Z was true, it was about getting Pakistan to admit it was true.

Read my post carefully next time.
