Former Azad Jammu and Kashmir chief justice Syed Manzoor Hussain Gallani said it was need of the hour to give Azad Jammu and Kashmir due facilities at par with the provinces of Pakistan without making it (AJK) a formal province of the country.

Talking to newsmen at the Kashmir Press Club, he also called for granting due representation to AJK in the national electoral college of Pakistan through granting it the formal status in the Constitution of Pakistan at par with a province in order to ensure safety and protection of the valley from Indian aggression.

The retired chief justice declared that he never pleaded for making Azad Jammu & Kashmir a province of Pakistan.

He demanded the grant of a formal constitutional status of AJK in the constitution of Pakistan to ensure the dispensation of all due rights to the people of AJK equivalent to the people of four provinces of the country.

Advocating the idea, he said that declaration of a formal status of AJK in the Constitution could help Pakistan secure and defend the due rights of AJK people at national and international forums.

For instance, he referred to the recent case on Pakistan-India water issue in the international court of Justice where India had adopted the stance that AJK was not the legal and constitutional part of Pakistan - nor it was ever claimed by Islamabad.

Justice (r) Gillani continued that AJK should be granted the constitutional status at par with a province of Pakistan till the settlement of Kashmir issue in order to ensure speedy development and progress in all spheres of life in AJK. “With the unprecedented development in all sections of life in the AJK, the territory of Azad Jammu Kashmir is required to be presented a role model for the people of occupied Jammu & Kashmir - who have already launched the indigenous struggle for liberation of the motherland from Indian yoke”, he emphasized.

He further said that if the prime minister of Pakistan could perform the role of the chairman of Azad Jammu & Kashmir Council, upper house of the AJK Parliament, under the interim constitution (Act 1974) of AJK, the people of Kashmir should also be given the representation in the national assembly of Pakistan.

Justice (r) Gillani said that grant of a formal constitutional status to AJK in Pakistan would strengthen the Kashmiris and help them ameliorate their life style.

He called upon the civil society especially local media of AJK to perform their due role to ensure the translation of the idea into reality. To a question, he said that necessary amendments in the interim constitution - Act 1974 of AJK should be made without further delay with prime focus to improve the current interim constitution to ensure and protect the due rights of the people.
