A foot overbridge near the main Commonwealth Games (CWG) venue Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium collapsed in Delhi on Tuesday, injuring at least 23 labourers. The injured, five of whom are critical, have been taken to hospital. The 100-metre-long foot over bridge, which was to connect the Nehru Stadium to a car parking lot, collapsed at around 3.10 PM in Lodhi Road, South Delhi.
Fire department officials said labourers were putting concrete mix at a portion of the bridge when the incident took place.
"A portion of the overbridge caved in. It is not on the main road but is part of the parking," Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta told a TV channel.
Most of the injured were rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Trauma Centre. Some were taken to the nearby Safdarjung Hospital.
The bridge was being built along with another overbridge at the cost of Rs 10.5 crore by Chandigarh-based company PNR Infra, Delhi government sources told PTI.
The Public Works Department of the Delhi government, which had given the contract to PNR Infra, has ordered an investigation into the incident.
PWD Chief Engineer Rakesh Mishra admitted that the incident was a "setback" but expressed confidence that the project would be completed before the CWG start on October 3.
The opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, the biggest sporting event being hosted by India since the 1982 Asiad Games, will be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on October 3. The stadium, the showpiece of the event, will also host the closing ceremony.
On Monday, two police personnel suffered injuries when a canopy erected at the stadium fell on them. The latest incident may further embarrass CWG organizers, who have been accused of mismanagement and corruption.
