First time in 9 yrs Indian, Pakistani troops exchange heavy firing in Uri sector
Srinagar: For the first time in nine years when India and Pakistan called truce, heavy firing exchanges between Indian and Pakistani troops erupted along the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector in North Kashmir's Baramulla district.
According to reports, the firing that began on Sunday night and continued for several hours is the first breach in ceasefire in the area since 2003.
It was learnt that the gunbattle started after Pakistani troops targetted Indian posts to push in a group of militants.
An Army official said: "Pakistani rangers fired on Chinar posts in Uri sector along LoC on Sunday at 9.00 pm." He went on to add that firing by the pak side was totally unprovoked and most of their attempts were aimed at facilitating infiltration by the militants.
The Indian Army has blamed the Pakistani counterpart for providing cover to the infiltrators who were trying to sneak into the Valley.
Sources said the Army would register a formal complaint with the Pakistani side on the issue.
Reports said that ceasefire violations by the Pakistani side are expected to go up in next few days as they may push in militants into the Valley ahead of the onset of winter.
This is the seventeenth time that Pakistan has violated the ceasefire along the international border (IB) and Line of Control (LoC) in the last one month
On August 17, there was heavy cross-border small arms firing on Indian posts along IB in Abdullian and Korotona Border Out Posts (BoPS) from Pakistan in R S Pura sub-sector in which BSF jawan Chander Rai was killed.
There were two firing incidents and ceasefire violations by Pakistan in Pansar Boder Out Post (BOP) along IB in Samba sector and Krishnagati forward belt along LoC barely on August 15. Pakistan troops had fired on Indian posts in Krishagati belt of Poonch sector on August 15 as India celebrated its Independence day. The firing had continued intermittently till the next day.
