The first lot of 500 tonnes hilsa is being sent to India through Benapole land port on Saturday.

Syed Anwar Moksud, general secretary of Kolkata Hilsa Importers’ Association, said Bangladesh government stopped exporting hilsa to India in 2012 but has recently allowed 500 tonnes of hilsa export to India on the occasion of Durga Puja.

The 500 tonnes of hilsa will reach India’s West Bengal within October 10 in separate phases, UNB reported quoting the official.

The Commerce Ministry took the decision of exporting 500 tonnes hilsa on Wednesday as a gesture of goodwill on the occasion of Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community, said its public relations officer Md Abdul Latif Bakshi.

The five-day Durga Puja is set to begin on October 4 next.

We don't have hilsa fish
If you do not have Hilsha, then send a million lambs to Palestine. Hope, they will accept your good gesture and will immediately forget and forgive you and general Ziaul Haq for killing 25,000 of them by your military in September 1970. Remember Black September and ask for God's forgiveness.

On the occasion of Durga Puja, the first shipment of 3 metric tonnes of hilsa fish is being sent to Benapole by the Bangladesh government to allow export to India.

Today, 20 tonnes of hilsa will be exported to India on Sunday. Six kilograms (about 3 rupees) worth of hives per kg has been seized. However, Bangladesh has not charged any duty.

Traders said all shipments of 5 metric tonnes of hilsa will be exported by October 5. The invoice will be discounted at duty-free facility.

Bangladesh government had stopped exporting hilsa to India since 2002 due to the shortage of hilsa in Bangladesh.

Earlier on September 25, the government has approved export of 500 tonnes of hilsa to India as a gesture of goodwill from Bangladesh on the occasion of Durga Puja.

Bangladesh banned the export of hilsa and other species of fish on Aug 1, 2012 following local business leaders’ call to control fish prices. The ban on all fish except hilsa was lifted on Sept 23 of that year.
