Alenia Aemacchi has rolled out the first M-346 advanced trainer for Israel in a ceremony held at the manufacturer’s plant in Venegono Superiore, Italy.

Dating from a July 2012 order, the company will supply 30 of the aircraft to the nation’s air force to replace its fleet of aged 60 Douglas A/TA-4 Skyhawks, alongside ground based training systems.

Delivery of the first two M-346s, to be known as the Lavi in Israeli service, is scheduled for summer 2014, with a further seven aircraft to be handed over this year, 18 in 2015 and the remainder in 2016.

Eleven of the Honeywell F124-GA-200-powered type are in different stages of construction at the Venegono facility, four of which have entered final assembly.

A total of 56 of the type have been ordered so far by four nations, including Italy, Poland and Singapore.

Last time we used trainers in combat was in 1967. And it was bad experience.

However, the aircraft is capable of pilot training and light attack duties (and the load is a far cry from that of the Fouga Magister, which proved effective at the close-support mission albeit with heavy casualties: six lost)

• Provisions provided for a total of 9 pylon stations (2× wingtip, 1× under-fuselage plus 6× underwing), capable of mounting up to 3,000 kg (6,600 lbs ) of external payload and up to 3× 630 litres (170 US gallon ) external drop tanks(only pylon stations 4, 5, 6 are wet-plumbed)

ANyway, IAF has a history of modifying the jet they get (see Mirage, A-4, F-4, F-16, F-15). Plus, don't necessarily limit attack duties to exploding ordnance. EW might be another possible role.

Israel has some 60 F-16A/B. ALl of them are used as trainers, op force, research...

Cadets of the IAF flight academy don't have to be in the air at the same time, you know. Basically, you don't need more than a dozen trainer jets to train even a hundred cadets.

IAF trainer aircraft are not going to carry any exploding ordnance at all. Last time IAF trainers were involved in combat resulted with bad memories. Nothing less than dedicated fighters for combat - this doctrine isn't going to retire anytime soon.
