Bidding has crossed PKR 1000 million...A landmark in electronic media industry....

Absar had promised that PEMRA would take care of cable operators. He cited the example of Europe and the United States, where DTH was functional and so was cable TV.

Mr Wakeel Khan briefing the participants about the bidding process

"In developed countries like the United States and Germany, where the DTH systems had been launched over 20 years ago, penetration of the DTH service is 30 per cent while 70 percent viewers still depend on the cable system, which shows that both systems can coexist," he had said on Tuesday.

He also spoke out against those who were illegally transmitting Indian DTH service, stating that the mafia responsible for it should also go to the courts against illegal Indian DTH service transmission.

Right now Rs. 2.5 Billion mark for single DTH license reached

so thats roughly $2.5 million
peanuts really of how much they will make in the long run.

Also its interesting to note Tata SKY who won the DTH license in India first, approached BSKYB of UK to help them with technical issues and in the end even copied the dish receiver and remote control of Sky TV UK

$25 million actually. DTH market is huge in Pakistan, every year $350 million is transferred to India to use illegal Indian DTH. This will generate 15,000 jobs.

oh ok but still this is peanuts

a country of 200 million people, the first ever DTH service provider paying only 25 million fee works out at around 0.25 cents per person living in pakistan. they will triple their money if even 20% of the country decide to choose DTH

Congrats revelation in pak media I hope. Hulu Netflix also launch in pak

.
they didn't want a monopoly so they didn't have a bidding process, they just set the license fee at $2.4 million for all DTH providers back in 2000.

That's not much at all, not sure why are you saying $25 million per licence is small amount? This is actually surprising. I've heard there was bidding for India DTH licence in 2008?

2.5 million in the year 2000, so $24 million after 17 years is due to inflation.

i was saying 25million is cheap because of the size of the market, the government is letting this one company hold a monopoly of a country of 200 million people. compare this with what mobile phone service operators have to pay when renewing or buying licenses and you see they pay billions of dollars for the same 200 million market.

trust me 25million fee is peanuts compared to how much money this one company will make, especially if they are the only dth provider in the country.

I've heard there will be 3 licences for three different companies. Anyway looks like bidding is still going on and may take many more hours to get clear picture.

oh okay so its going to be 3 providers which is fair enough

i was thinking if its one company surely the license fee should be in the 100 of millions dollars, 25million sounded wrong because that company would have made that money back in a matter of months. but yeah 3 providers paying the same makes sense

Don't forget these companies will have to invest hundreds of millions dollars to setup. Initial investment is expected to be around $400 million. Anyway bidding crossed Rs2.7 billion now and still going.

Bidding crossed Rs 3 billion.

Looks like current tv channels don't want their monopoly to end. They were even complaining why not allow them to bid for DTH licence, are you kidding me?

Watch bidding live

Looks like top three bidders will get 3 licences.

Close to Rs 3.3 billion now, not sure where it will stop. Remember top three bidders will get licences. I don't know why they are taking so much time, bidding increase should have been 50-100 million per bid and not 20.
