KARACHI: At least 5 people were injured, two of them seriously, in a major fire that erupted at a paint factory in site area, Karachi on Wednesday.

The injured have been shifted to hospital. No deaths have been reported as yet.

Fire tenders from across the city were called in to bring the raging blaze under control. Army and naval helicopters also took part in the fire extinguishing exercise.

According to eye witnesses, the fire broke out at the ground floor of the factory at 2:45 pm which then quickly spread to envelop the multi-storeyed building.

A snorkel and 18 fire tenders of the City Government besides those of DHA and Navy are still making efforts to control the blaze.

There have been a number of explosions within the premises. These are believed to have been caused by the chemical containers catching fire and then bursting with bangs. Firefighters fear that the blaze may spread to surrounding industrial units, and efforts are underway to prevent this.

They say thick smoke and presence of paint and other chemicals is hampering their efforts to extinguish the flames. The sheer intensity of the blaze, too, kept firefighters at bay.

Of the 12 boilers in the factory, which is spread over 25 acres, 2 have been completely gutted.

In the last few years, the SITE area has seen several major blazes in various chemical factories and illegal chemical warehouses -- causing great suffering and millions of rupees in losses .

I think we need to better develop our environment. By that I mean that if we have asked the business industry to invest in us we must be able to keep their investment secure. And when a fire brakes out we must have the right stuff to extinguish that fire.
