LAHORE: Test cricketer Umar Akmal was arrested by the police after a heated exchange with a traffic warden near Firdous Market in Lahore, Express News reported on Saturday.
A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against him at the Gulberg police station and he will be presented in a court within the next 24 hours.
The Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) said that Akmal broke a traffic signal and was rude to the warden, identified as Zeeshan.
Akmal reportedly tried to drive away when the warden stopped him to ask for his papers.
The warden claimed that Akmal swore at him also threatened him.
Akmal refutes these claims, stating that he was rushing to a wedding when the traffic warden stopped him. He also claimed that the warden slapped him, injuring part of his face.
Speaking to the media, Gulberg assistant superintendant police (ASP) Zahid Nawaz said that Akmal’s face was not hurt and therefore there was no evidence to support his claim. He added that the warden’s shirt was torn near his collar and if anyone had resorted to violence, it was Akmal, not the warden.
The cricketer was taken to Gulberg police station after the incident and he is currently detained there. His father and brother arrived at the station shortly after his detention.
