There are acoustic based sniper locator systems that have been around for a while. Basically a powerful listening device picks up on the sound of the gunshot being fired from a sniper and tries to hone in on the location. They work well and so far have been predominantly used on vehicles...but i think they can now be taken to the next step...
Next step should be(that u can do as ur project)...wearable acoustic sensors. The soldiers will have them on their bodies...and some central software can gather the data from these and process it to locate enemies.
So for example imagine a team of Pak soldiers carrying out some anti terror op. They are in an urban environment...and enemies are firing at them from various locations(including ARs and they might even have Snipers positioned). The soldiers are behind cover...engaged in a firefight. The acoustic sensors on soldier A pick up the acoustic signature of bullets flying around...and an algorithm accounts for the bullets being fired from soldier A himself(so that the soldier's position doesn't get marked as hostile fire). It will also have to take into account the soldier's movement bcuz the acoustic signature of incoming bullets will change depending on the position of the soldier(this accounting for movement is already done on vehicles where these acoustic systems are used). Other sensors on other soldiers also pick up the data from their respective positions...all of this gets fed to some central processing unit where it essentially tries to pin point the exact(or a good approximate) enemy positions by sort of triangulating it(data from multiple soldiers spread out). The enemy positions data then gets shared with the soldiers...the goal would be to make all this happen fast enough so that it's in "real time". The soldiers can be wearing AR glasses so that the enemy position gets superimposed and highlighted red while friendlies in blue or something like that. Or if there's Pak army snipers then they can use that data to take out hostiles.
I hope that made sense. This would essentially be an awesome friend and foe system which would light up enemies and give away their positions as soon as they fire and provide real time data on targets. It would be immensely helpful in COIN operations and save lives of soldiers.
I would like other members to scrutinize this idea specially professionals who may have experience in this type of work. Please tag those members if u know any...
