Turkey’s top religious body, the Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), has appointed Huriye Martı, a professor at Necmettin Erbakan University, to the highest office in the directorate ever held by a woman.

Martı’s appointment was announced in a post in the Official Gazette on March 13.

On March 11, Diyanet chair Ali Erbaş said the directorate will select and appoint female deputy muftis in all provinces across Turkey.

Speaking during a news briefing in the capital Ankara, Erbaş said the Diyanet is working to include more women in official positions.

“We will select and appoint female deputy muftis in all our provinces as soon as possible,” he said, adding that female “supervisors” will be appointed in all provinces of the country.

A consultation meeting under the title “Islam and Woman” will be held soon with women theologians, Erbaş stated.

Since when there is women clerics in islam??!o_O

Female scholars are present in Islam since the time Islam’s inception 1400 years ago. Female Islamic scholarship can be traced throughout the centuries.

Female scholarship is not some water down feminist bullshit. It’s still traditional Islam and Islamic scholarship.

Females can’t be Imams of mixed gatherings. They can’t lead mix gender prayers according to most schools of thoughts. I think you are mistaking the two

Yep 100% agree. Aisha (ra) and Fatima (ra) were both experts in Islam and taught female and male audiences (whilst observing Purdah). In the UK the more active communities amongst the ahle sunnah are working to create female scholars to help spread Islamic awareness in our communities.

Yet again the Turks lead the way, for us Muslims the Turkish way is the only way, where a skirt can live with a Hijab side by side in complete harmony.

Seen with my own eyes, (spent time with a Turkish family) one daughter wearing a Hijab, the other was a DJ with punk hair and wearing a mini-skirt, both were loved and accepted by the family, both regarded themselves as Muslim and prayed regularly.

Was so impressed, would love that level of freedom for my country.

This requires a brave leader.

ISLAM has to modernise, we have to treat women as equals. The west has grown because their women contribute to their production, science, education. We must progress if our religion is to see another 1000 years. Hopefully we will progress in a respectful manner, with women having honour as much as the men.
