CM says Sharjeel got back after IHC permission; Memon says he was ‘abducted’ by NAB; protests ‘separate’ Ehtesab laws for Punjab, Sindh
HYDERABAD: Criticising the brief detention of PPP’s senior leader Sharjeel Memon, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Sunday said if this attitude was not done away with, then the ‘politically-motivated’ federal institutions will be sent packing.
Talking to the media after visiting a power project in Nooriabad here, he said Sharjeel Memon had returned after getting permission from the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
The court had ordered that Sharjeel Memon should not be arrested before a hearing, he added.
He alleged that only PPP members were being targeted and had Memon been called he would have appeared himself.
“We have always respected courts. Sharjeel will appear before the court tomorrow and we will accept its decision,” he added.
Talking about the detention of MQM-Pakistan leader, Murad said Dr Farooq Sattar had not been arrested as per his information. He said warrants for Sattar’s arrest were issued months ago but he never got bail for them.
Murad dismissed the notion that the Pakistan People’s Party was protecting Sharjeel Memon.
“If we had to support and protect Sharjeel we would have asked him to land at the Karachi International Airport,” the CM speaking to reporters in Khairpur said.
“Our party believes in supremacy of the law. Whether Sharjeel Memon is involved in corruption or not it will be decided by the courts,” he said while replying to a question. — Agencies
Asim Yasin from Islamabad adds: Terming his brief detention by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) ‘kidnapping’ on arrival in Pakistan, PPP leader Sharjeel Memon on Sunday asked why there were separate laws of accountability (Ehtesab) for the Punjab and Sindh.
“I was not arrested at the airport but ‘abducted’. I came back to Pakistan to face allegations, as I am not the one to run away from problems,” he said while addressing a press conference here.
Memon was taken into custody at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport by six plainclothes personnel of the NAB Crime Wing on the advice of NAB Karachi.
The NAB released Memon after getting verification and undertaking on bail before arrest from his lawyer.
Memon said the NAB personnel manhandled him and another incumbent MPA who accompanied him at the airport and refused to give out details on why they were being shifted to an undisclosed location.
However, he said the officials did not mistreat them at the department but objected to the way they were taken in custody.
Memon said he went abroad for medical purposes and had prior permission from the Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah. He said all of a sudden his name was put on the Exit Control List, following which he contacted the Sindh High Court on the matter.
“Putting my name on the ECL was an attempt to frame me, as no state institution gave me a notice about investigations initiated against me,” said Sharjeel Memon. The PPP leader said a reference was filed against him although the SHC had approved his bail.
“For the PPP, the law of the country is entirely different,” he said.
Memon said he was willing to cooperate with the department for probe into corruption references against him but there was a procedure for that which must be followed.
He expressed concern over alleged lack of action against corruption in Punjab.
Talking about the legal cases, Memon said he had returned to Pakistan to fight the corruption allegations against him, as he was innocent.
